Well, I have the dv2500t with XP, but I was wondering how I could manually turn off the monitor without putting the lid down.

I also noticed that if I carry my laptop with the lid closed, while the computer is still on, the speakers make that sharp squeeking noise that you get when you put a microphone too close to the speakers. I guess it's the microphone the webcam hitting the speakers? Would just pressing mute be ok or would it still cause damage?

I think your mic's volume level is too high which could give you feedback. Try lowering it or even muting it using the sound mixer control panel

edit; putting your computer to sleep or some sort of screensaver setting might be able to turn the monitor off

You could do a shortcut to a blank screensaver to simply turn off the monitor... or have that file on your desktop in any icon you want... really simple.

Far as the computer being on with the lid down, someone changed your settings in "power settings"... check that out and you will see the choices for changing the settings when the monitor is down.

edit: oh, I see I did not read the second part of your question correctly... well, in that case, if you want the computer on, you might be able to do a shortcut that turns on the screensaver and turns off the speaker... or even have one icon, like before. Hmm... never thought of that before, in a combo like that, but it should work (of course, I'm guessing about the mute speakers part).

My question is why is the mic always on? I'm not even using the webcam. I know by muting it, I won't get that noise, but isn't it still technically on, so wouldn't it damage via magnetic wave or something... I don't know. I guess I'll just mute it from now on when I move from place to place while the laptop is still on.

Wouldn't just creating a link to a blank screensaver still leave some backlight? Sometimes when I'm in class, I just want to turn off the monitor for a few seconds and easily turn it back on somehow... I guess screensaver is the only way. Instead of a desktop link, I wish I could just press a hotkey and it'll go to a screensaver.

The best way is to put it to sleep when the lid is down. It wakes up fast. Besides leaving it on will be hot inside your carrier. The HD is technically on and might cause damage if transporting it with jarring motions.

you can download nircmd from www.nirsoft.net and then set it to "nircmd.exe monitor off" to turn off the monitor

Thanks for the link.. Great little application. I did not like it installing to the sys tray but you can turn that off in the preferences. Very easy to set short cut key as well.. I just hit ctrl m and screen is off. Perfect power saving tool and for when I just want to listen to music.

I use Power Monitor Off (google it). Even though it says that it is a free trial and will stop working after 30 times, I've been using it more than that and it's working with no problem.
