Well I received an HP DV4000 almost a week ago. I really like the laptop, however I went with the matte screen because I thought Brightview would be too reflective and distracting. Now that I have the matte version I am thinking that I may have made the wrong choice. The colors on the matte version seem kind of dull in comparision and the screen does not seem too bright, especially on battery power with the brightness turned down. Those that have the Brightview version, how do you feel about it? Would it be impossible to use outside. Is it really worth me returning this notebook and waiting almost 2 to 3 weeks for a new one to be built?

Personally, I wouldn't want to use my laptop in the sunlight. The glare is so bad that hardly anything on the screen can be read. I'm in the office all day, so I prefer the Brightview... but if I had to use it outside in daylight, I'd head back indoors.
-
Excuse me for the confusion. I am not saying that I will always be using the laptop outside. I am just wondering if the Brightview screen would limit me in the places I can use it. Classrooms, on the deck, etc. Does anyone have the Brightview and regret it, or is it a must have?

I like Brightview. It's nice in the office or when I'm watching a movie while in transit. But in a brightly lit room or with a light at my back, the glare gets pretty annoying. The one time I tried to use my laptop outside in broad daylight, all I could see was my reflection. Nonetheless, if I had to choose all over again, I'd still get the Brightview... I'm in the office most of the day. But if you're a student that's always on the go, you might have made the right decision in going with the matte screen.

Actually, I've found that glossy screens work much better in sunlight, especially when they're turned away from direct sunlight. Matte screens tend to wash out, at least with my experiences.

Actually, I tried that. I was at an outdoor cafe and tried many different positions including hiding under a canopy without any luck. Even when I went inside, the light coming through the cafe window made the glare pretty bad. I had to go to the back next to the bathroom to find a dark corner.

I regularly go to the library at school to do my homework. I have absolutely no problem at all. Another thing though, I like to be able to watch my own back to see if anyone is approaching me...
Another tme I had to finish typing a paper in the car with no tinted windows. It wasn't hard but I had to move the screen down so the sunlight doesn't reflect off of it. Was still bright enough to see. -
I would exchange it for another matte screen. My matte screen on my dv4000 is amazing. Again, it all depends on what you are using it for. I'm a developer, and us techies don't really like the glossy screens. They are generally considered to be consumer-level and designed for game kiddies.

remember matte is better for your eyes if your staring or reading something, glossy is more for the "watching" part. Don't know how the matte version is, ill be getting mines this week with matte as i dont like the leakage on the glossy version. I also feel that the matte is more durable, might be just an illusion though. Glossy IS more contrasty but again i didnt like the leakage on it, the reflectiveness isnt that annoying but i can imagine seeing light bulb reflections for months and days might annoy someone, but i never had a problem with them.
Is the matte really dark and not bright? i guess it depends what youll be doing on it, watching or staring. too bright might make you blind. -
I chose the matte screen on the nw9440 and it's beautiful. As a graphic designer the glossy screen doesn't work as it doesn't show true color, sure it looks nice on screen when indoors with no lights, but it's not accurate.
And I wouldn't want the glare as I love to go out on the balcony and work. -
I detest the Brightview screen on mine. If I had bought it customized I definitely would have gone matte, but this is largely a preference thing. As a general rule I don't like any glossy screens on any displays.

I brought back an Acer before I picked up my V2000 for that same reason. The difference is amazing. For anything other than pure text work brightview is the way to go.

Wait a second.... I remember asking the HP rep a few weeks ago if their dv line of notebooks had the option for a matte screen and they told me "No".
