I'm trying to upgrade the memory module under my laptop from a 256mb to a 1GB by PNY (1GB PC2700 DDR-333 SODIM). The new memory is detected by CPUz, but not my OS, so essentially I've reduced my laptop's memory to just 256mb instead of the new total of 1280mb. I understand that certain brands are not compatible, but is there any way I can change a setting which will allow the new memory module to be detected by my laptop? Thanks for any help.

That's a new one. Try removing your 256MB SODIMM and seeing what happens. Different memory chip brands don't always place nice with each other. Do the usual MemTest86+ run too.

Thanks, bud. As always you're quick with a reply. I've thought about that, but I'm kinda hesitant about digging through the keyboard to get to the other memory module. But I got the 1 gig PNY for only $74, so I don't wanna return it without trying everything first. Any tip on prying the keyboard off without breaking it?

The HP service guide for your notebook documents how to get at the internal SODIMM slot, but IIRC you remove the four screws along the bottom back edge of the notebook, pry off the bezel above the keyboard, unscrew the keyboard, and you're there. Unplug from the wall and remove the battery before doing any of this.
