    Hello,

Trying to upgrade the 512mb memory from my father-in-law's HP ZE5615CA laptop as it is dreadfully slow.

However, I can't seem to find memory anywhere. I tried installing this which worked on my old Dell C640 (which also was said to only take 512mb per slot, but not true) as online it appeared the Ze5615 also used PC2100 RAM ...

However, the laptop didn't recognize it at all.

It appears that the current memory in the slots are 2 256mb Samsung PC2700 DDR2's. This was a shock given that everywhere I've searched has said this laptop uses PC2100. Further, the ones being sold were only 256mb for $150 each!!

Anyhow, before I actually buy any memory, wondering if anyone could direct me to memory that will work.

    Thanks!

    PC2700 and PC2100 are DDR, not DDR2

The PC2700 should downclock to the PC2100 level.

It appears the notebook uses PC2100, so what you picked out will work.

The Maximum memory it can take though, is 1GB. So, you are better off going with two 512MB sticks. Than just one 1GB Stick. To get Dual Channel. But if you cant find a 512 stick or it costs alot more, just going with one 1GB stick wont hurt. ;)

Odd, as the laptop came with the 2 256mb PC2700 sticks.

Tried the one I ordered, but the lappy wouldn't even boot up. Might try it again, maybe I installed it incorrectly?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Okay, tried that 1 gig stick again. Same thing, turned on the laptop and just got a black screen. Tried putting it in both slots too.

I then used some older PC-2100 256meg chips I used to have in my Dell, they worked. But of course that gets me no further ahead!

My concern is whether any 512mb PC-2100 RAM will work in this laptop? Seem to recall hearing people say HP's are quite finicky (or used to be) with the type of RAM used?

Can't believe it doesn't recognize the 1 gig stick!

    Thanks!

Its possible that it cant recognize a 1GB Stick in one slot, but can recognize a 512MB stick in a single slot.

    I suggest getting 2x512MB Sticks. To get a total of 1GB. ;)
