Hi
Recently purchased a Compaq 6720s Int Celeron M540 1.8GHz, 1GB Memory, 80GB HHD, as a birthday present for my Granddaughter (mainly for school).
I'm trying to set it up ready for her and am a bit disappointed with the start up time (3 minutes). Is this normal for a notebook with Vista Home basic? I've not used Vista b/4....XP only.
Would it improve by adding another 1GB of Memory, or better to add 2GB as a pair.
Also, I'd like to get rid of the bloat ware that's installed from HP to hopefully improve the speed and disk size.
Any help will be gratefully received.
Regards
Bob.

First, I would get rid of the bloatware by following Orev's clean install guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228
It will speed things up. As for memory, I would suggest upgrading to 2GB (as this will also help performance).

Thanks for quick reply.
I had a quick look at Orev's thread b/4 posting.....not sure I'm savy enough to attempt it though.
The notebook came preloaded with Vista and doesn't have a disk. Can it still be done? (sorry, haven't read it thoroughly).
Also, would 1x1GB Memory stick be OK instead of a pair. -
You need a Vista disc to do the clean install (not the recovery discs). The other option is to uninstall uneeded apps from the program list and run the system defrag.
If you buy a 1GB stick, leave one of the 512MB sticks in the unit so you will have 1.5GB of ram instead of just 1GB. More ram is always better.....

OK. Thanks for your time.
I'll venture some more tomorrow.
