Ok, I need to ask 2 questions. Planning to buy a laptop and veering towards zv5000z.
    1. I wanted someone to confirm that adding additional RAM by myself won't void the warranty. I expect adding RAM will entail opening the up the Laptop, hence the question (yes, it is my first laptop).

    2. I noticed Compaq has R3000z that seems to be similar to HPs zv5000z. It seems to be about $50 or so less than the zv5000z. Any reason why I shouldn't save $50 and buy Compaq instead?

    Thanks for your responses.

    Hi webzo -

    1. I purchased my ZD7000 over the phone and specifically indicated I will be upgrading the RAM myself, which they accepted. Not sure what the panel looks like on the ZV5000, but if it's similar to the ZD7000, it literally took about 10 seconds once I got the cover off. I don't think HP has a problem with this if you order directly from them. If you do get it from a retailer, they're probably much less willing to indicate you can open it yourself - so you have to bring it in for service and/or purchase the overpriced extended warranty through them. That said, on mine there wasn't a sticker or anything so I don't know how they could tell anyway...

    2. These look like the exact same machine, as you indicated. Make sure you check all current rebates for each model at the following link (I think you may have done that already though) below.

you can do the ram easliy yourself and not effect warrenty. Also the notebooks are exactly the same except the outside of them. Depending how you configure them will change which cost more. I'd just advise you to choose on price or what you think looks better. I got the R3000T because the outside is black and won't show scratches at much. Also I really love the clip that opens and closes the lid. It is a metal bar which is much stronger then the normal plastic type.

    Compaq R3000T (CTO)

    2 X 1024MB RAM
    Radeon 9600 128MB
