    Hello!
Since updating the BIOS to allow for fixed graphics mode, I've been anxious to play minecraft with the AMD Card instead of the integrated intel one. Well, after starting it up today with the AMD card activated (and on AC power), it freezes and once I minimize it I cannot go back. Other games are working relatively fine.
In addition, when launching my fan speed goes up a lot, and stays high for a while.
It works just fine with the Intel card enabled, but with much lower performance (as is expected).

    Specs: dv7tqe-6100, Direct X 11, 2720QM, 6700M. dxdiag says my driver version is 8.871.0.0

Is this a problem with my drivers, or is this an overheating problem? If it is an overheating problem, how can I max the fan speed or monitor the GPU Temp?

Same problem here, always crashes after 3-10 mins of gameplay. I tried many drivers including 11.5b, 11.7, 11.8 preview, stock hp.

It's not an overheating issues since my cpu/gpu temps never get over 75c. I guess it a compatibility issue with the drivers or 6700m series in general.

It works fine for me with the stock HP drivers with no additional GPU software (like afterburner). This game is terribly optimized and apparently terrible sensitive as well.

    Is this with the 6700m?

6770m 1gb. I can only prevent it from crashing within a couple of minutes by completely uninstalling all ati software, running drivercleaner (idk if I need to), running the ati uninstall thing, and then deleting all graphic drivers in the device manager. Then when I install the stock HP drivers the game runs fine (but not as well since the 11.5b is a pretty significant performance increase even if it does make Minecraft crash).

It's frustrating and I'd love to hear if anyone can get it to work without crashing with updated drivers.

Well it's definitely a driver issue since I can play it all day on the stock HP drivers but not on any updated ones. Which sucks because all of my other games run better on the updated drivers.

I just tried running it in compatibility mode and the 11.8 preview drivers and it still locks up.

How did you manage to install this driver? The installer runs for ~5 seconds and says it's finished, when i check the driver it's still the old 11.8 (8.88.0)

I installed over the 11.5b hotfix driver.

    • ran the *.exe file (the one linked in my previous post)
    • extracted to the default folder
    • stopped the installer
    • navigated to the folder the files extracted to
    • right-clicked on the setup.exe file & chose "run as administrator"
    • chose to do a custom install
    • clicked the deselect all button on the appropriate page (I did this as to only install the driver.)
    • re-selected the driver
    • finished the install
    • rebooted

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

I did a 11.5b clean install, and followed your steps after that. However I encountered a problem at the custom installation page, I cannot dis-select anything and it shows that everything is up to date even though they're not. How strange...

I'll guess that the entire 11.5b hotfix was installed, that will cause some problems. I only mentioned 11.5b driver because that was what I was on at the time I installed 11.8 preview OpenGL file. I only had the 11.5b driver and not any thing else besides the stock files, maybe I should have mentioned that. ;)

For any of the none HP AMD driver files only the driver is suggested for upgrade.

    I would suggest
    • uninstall the entire catalyst suite (I suggest using the 11.8 setup.exe to do the uninstall)
    • I personally would also perform a driver sweep
    • reinstall the HP driver
    • then install the updated driver and only the driver (again as admin, I do this because the installation does not fail doing it this way for some reason)

Thank you again, but i noticed there's a mobility mod version in the same guru thread [email protected]

    This version works perfectly.

I was actually using an overclock while running minecraft on the 11.8 drivers. I'll try again later today when I get some free time.

Have you tried doing a fresh install of the stock HP drivers with no added software? It runs perfectly fine for me with the stock (11.4?) HP drivers. I'd just like to have updated drivers because other games will run better.

Well I reverted the overclock and turned off afterburner. It ran for maybe 30 minutes before it still crashed.

I get the same thing. I can't even get it to run with the Intel card, either. Works pretty stable in fullscreen (press F11) but still not perfect.

Guys at minecraft forums are seriously no help, they keep blaming it on the old openGL graphic switching issue...

Well the stock drivers work fine for me and the 11.8 update (not just the driver, the whole suite) works with a crash every 30-60 minutes, so it's not bad. And the intel graphics doesn't crash for me either.

Idk what to tell ya =/

After wiping the drivers, I installed the stock drivers, then installed the most recent driver (Mobility 11.8 WHQL modified).

Minecraft runs very smooth at 1920x1080 with the 6770M at stock clocks and all CCC 3D settings set to their highest. Minecraft is still running after two hours.

Yeah I did the same thing and it's working fine for me as well

i just filled every single space in my friends house with obsidian squares for putting pig spawners above my little underground house thing making a bunch of pigs spawning down there xD

it'll take him an hour just to chop it all up

Did you modify the driver yourself or did you find it someplace? I modified it myself after waiting a few days for one to appear with no luck.

I see, I modified the 11.8 final version to get it to install. I'm getting better 3DMark scores with it for some reason over the preview driver.

I can't really upload them but I can tell you what I did. You will need the previous HP drivers that were extracted from prior installs, if not deleted they will be in the SWSetup folder on c:\

    • download http://www2.ati.com/DriVeRs/mobile/11-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe
    • extract the files
    • navigate to either the folder SWSetup\Drivers\Video\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF or the W76A_INF folder for the most recent HP AMD drivers
    • open the *.inf named 'C7xxxxxx.inf
    • find [ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]
    • copy the strings in that section
    • navigate to the folder within the extracted 11.8 files C:\ATI\Support\11-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF
    • open the file "C7122939.inf"
    • paste in the strings from the other *.inf to the same section as the previous file
    • save
    • run the setup.exe file in C:\ATI\Support\11-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl

Oh crap, vysnc problem is back in 11.8 whql. Every game is choppy even with vysnc forced on.

I think i'll switch back to 11.8 preview or 11.5b hotfix.

Edit: And for the love of god mincraft is still crashing.

I uninstalled all catalyst component, then installed the newest HP driver and installed 11.8 whql over it. Am i doing it right?

i think there's something still going on with this game..

i installed the dna 11.8 driver and i ran the game for like an hour and it was fine but then it started crashing and just never stops

the stock HP drivers don't crash but it has vsync issues with just about everything and obviously the worse performance

wittynorseman, you still having success with your modified driver? like long sessions that don't crash? i tried the modified ones a while back when you posted that but i had similar results.. game would run fine for about an hour then crash and then would just crash within a few minutes every time
