    Hi,
I'm thinking about getting an HP Mini 311 from the HP website. I plan on getting it with the N280 CPU, Ion graphics and Windows XP (I need XP for some hardware I want to use that doesn't have W7 drivers). The problem is that the HP site won't let me order it with 2 or 3 GB of RAM unless I order it with Windows 7. Is the Mini 311 limited to 1 GB of RAM under XP or can I upgrade this on my own later? I thought XP could address up to 4 GB of RAM?

    Thanks! :)

Thanks, I googled and found a link to the service manual and it gives all the info on how to install and what type of RAM. That's weird that HP won't sell you the RAM upgrade unless you buy Windows 7.

It's one of the limitations required by Microsoft: max. 1GB memory, only 160GB hard drive (I think it was first even smaller) etc. If the laptop had features better than those, manufacturer was required to bundle Vista license instead. Some manufacturers then put in Vista Business with XP Pro downgrade.

I think that hasn't really changed with Win7. And the XP license is probably a lot cheaper than usually, since it competes with free Linux OS'es.
