my dv5t has a spare pcie slot, so i was wondering if I can use this ssd. Anyone tried it before?

I've heard that you cannot booth from mini pcie ssd has the bios doesn't have that option. Basically it's there but the bios don't know what it is and thus cannot boot from it.

you may be able to. the unit may see it as another drive, thus you can put the OS on the card and boot from it. al depends on BIOS.

i don't intend on using it as a boot drive, just for storage

then it should suffice as a storage device. your unit may read it as a removable drive, but not 100% on this.

I recall reading that only hp-certified wireless cards could be installed in hp laptops. Do you think the same applies to the empty pcie slot?

No, only wireless cards are restricted. HP claims that the FCC made them do it even though no other OEMs have BIOS whitelists.
