I've tried to do the minimal system restore twice and both times it has failed right at the end of the process. It says that the recovery has failed and only gives me three options: save log (which I have uploaded), details, and retry. Pressing retry forces me to redo the process. On my 3rd try, a command prompt window popped up with the text:
And then the computer just hangs there.
The only things I did when I got my laptop was create recovery disks and backup the swsetup folder. This is a dv6tse by the way.
Edit: I'm now at the HP Recovery Manager, should I do a system recovery to "Restore your computer to its original factory condition"?

If you've already backed up the swsetup folder, you could always try just installing windows 7 using a windows 7 install disc (perfectly legal to burn your own, see http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/432564-hp-laptop-out-box-guide-2-0-windows-7-a.html step 1.1 for how to make one if you don't already have one sitting around).
Really it's the cleanest install you can do and it will include no bloatware at all. Then when you're done, activate it using the key on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop and then install the drivers from SWSetup (open each folder, run the setup.exe for each one). Takes a little while but it works fine. Plus you have the advantage of NOT installing things you know you don't want, like Norton in my case. -
I found the solution. My wireless was turned off when I was doing the recovery. It has to be ON during the process or else this error will appear.
