That's good to hear. This is something I would definitely be willing to try if the price was right.
You can find them on eBay for ~$30, but no US versions.

I would be willing to try this if I could find a US keyboard for around $20. I really don't want to spend more than that just to test if it will work. Would anyone be willing to donate small amounts so we can try this?
-
Ill contribute $5. Anyone else ? -
Has anyone been successful at switching to a different wireless card yet? Something in the Intel 6200 or 6300 series?

HP Envy 17 Keyboard 617348-001 - LaptopPartsExpert.com
I still do not I have my lappy (no stock here) -
The only pictures that I saw are taken from the manuals, and the only connector in proximity of the main keyboard one is for fingerprint reader
Notice also the different spacing of the "notches" that goes under the external surface where the touchpad is. Some owners will have to verify that there's enough space to insert those notches that in the Envy one are in different position, compare in particular at the page 64 of dv6 manual and the photos post above: for the dv6 the notch is between right-CTRL and left arrow (most under the latter effectively), for the Envy it is right under the CTRL key!
I hope I was clear enough... -
Seems that also there the light cable connector
-
Theres a power connector in the picture. Someone, get one and test this!
-
As I stated earlier, first $5 comes from me. Who wants to do this ? -
I can tell you that my DV7-4269wm walmart special (bought 3/2011) does NOT have the extra connector for the keyboard backlight. I know that this a different machine than most of yours but just an FYI. Although I am looking for a 1080p screen for it and I think I might have found one.
-
Thanks
Edit:
Actually I might not disassemble is. I just saw the manual and graphics from the previous poster and both look the same. Do you guys want me to disassemble it and post pictures? -
-
-
I'm trying to remove it as per the instructions in the manual, but it seems too difficult. They say that you need to push on a small hole on the back of the keyboard with a screwdriver. When I try it, it seems like the keyboard will break before it comes out. I'll keep trying.
Edit:
I'm giving up for now. I'll reset and try again later -

Edit:
I Got It OFF!!!
Results and pictures forthcoming. -
.
I've looked at the manual, and it simply say "push until it disengages" but it seems more difficult than expected... But if HP wrote this it must be the right way... try maybe with a rapid push instead of slowly pushing it outwards... but it's my interpretation! -
have followed all the steps?
-
Ok guys I got it off and I don't think the other keyboard will work without modifications. Here are the issues:
- There is no port for the power/light cable. The closest thing is the finger print reader port, but I don't know if that will work.
- The tabs on the bottom of the Envy 17 keyboard seem to be placed in different locations. I put the spacing of the tabs on the picture and below for reference.
I'm not sure if simply replacing the keyboard will work. People who know more about this than me will have to make the judgment.
Additional information
- Length from tab 1 to 2: 62mm [Red]
- Length from tab 2 to 3: 86mm [Orange]
- Length from tab 3 to 4: 96mm [Yellow]
- Length from tab 4 to 5: 62mm [Green]
- Length from tab 5 to 6: 57mm [Blue]

- Length of touchpad cable: 9mm [Yellow]
- Length of keyboard cable: 9mm [Green]
- Length of fingerprint reader cable: 9mm [Red]

- The Orange box on the picture with the label is the thing that you press against to remove the keyboard. It is strong, so you wont risk breaking the board like I had worried.

thanks for the info speedking261
a question, the tabs have a specific place where you fit in, regardless of each?
or just a complete gap for all tabs fit in a simple area without independence?
In other words, if they are not in the same place, you can not insert? -
Which model exactly do you have? I have a dv7 4295
-
Ohhh that's a bummer. Are you sure that's the fingerprint reader and not the trackpad light?
-
-
also would be nice, because with a simple doubletab on trackpad the on/off -
awww man that sucks if it doesn't fit.
-
Maybe the fingerprint reader would be the same size as the keyboard LED power? (But then you would have to trade the fingerprint reader for a back-light keyboard) I wish I could provide any suggestions, but I have nothing at this time. Lets find some way to make this work.
Side note: Taking the keyboard off requires a lot of force. I feel like I will eventually break something if I keep doing this. -
-
The backlitcable is 4pin, and the fingerprintconnector looks to be 5pin. I doubt it will work. Ripwind said that he thought he saw an unused connector, so maybe it's there on just some models. Not likely, but still... Something to hope for.
-
The only thing to hope for is a connector on the motherboard but not visible with top chassis in place... but in this case you'll have to drill/saw the metal... -
Anyways I'd never drill a hole in my computer for backlit keyboard, seems too risky and I dont wanna loose my warranty. -

If I recall there may have been one unused header, 4 pin connector. No idea what it was for, so possibly

I currently have an Asus G73 series laptop, and it has the backlit keyboard. I love this feature, and would like it on this computer. I upgraded the cpu on a DV7-9207, so I am fairly confortable disassembling and checking for myself to see exactly what is on the system board. I am actually more concerned about the tab spacing difference of the Envy keyboard. Onward with research! -
Anybody have any luck installing a 6200 or 6300 series Intel wireless card into their DV7T or DV6T, and get it working? Very good "Mod" if it works!

Regarding the issue of the keyboard tabs, would it be possible to replace the rear casing on the envy keyboard with the one from the dv6/7? This would require actually require disassembling the keyboard modules though. One thought I heard a while back was to wire the power from the usb ports to the keyboard. Another thought would be to find where the power attaches to the trackpad and re-wire it to the keyboard. Both these options would be best done with a ribbon cable so as to fit under the keyboard.
-
Even if there is a power connector, and I believe there is, It does not seem as though we will be able to secure the keyboard. Screwholes do not line up. Chopping off the tabs and using double-sided tape may work for some folks, though.
-
The tabs should not be a problem with a dremel tool to the casing to accommodate the different layout. Right now the problem is, is there a connecter.
We can figure out screws and such later. IMHO -

If anyone want to verify my findings/remove the keyboard, here are some tips:
- You will need a small metal rod/stick/screwdriver/ect. I used a screwdriver from a glasses repair kit.
- All you have to do is remove one screw (this is displayed in the manual), insert a tiny screwdriver into it, and then push.
- You will need to apply a lot of force. I had to apply so much force that the tiny metal screwdriver bent. Don't worry about the keyboard itself breaking, but make sure the tabs on the side bottom don't snap off.
Good luck -
When HP depletes their current 6770 1GB models, they might going to replace it with 6770 2GB models.
their part number # on page 23 of service guide:
Quad Core models: 650799-001
Dual Core models: 650800-001
