Hello everyone, I've recently gotten a hold of the M6-1035dx. And it has GOT to be the most frustrating piece of hardware I've ever gotten from hp (I LOVE MY 5 YEAR OLD DV7)

Anyways, now for the point and purpose of this thread.

MODIFICATIONS!!! Yay, Here I plan on keeping a list of known and working modifications to the M6-1035dx. As this thread grows, I plan on keeping the main post updated.

Why mod? There are a few things that this laptop has issues with, such as using a second hard-drive, using other WiFi cards, and most of all, that darn 1080p screen we are all drooling over!!

Software Mods Well..sort of...

Windows 7 vs Windows 8??

IF your staying stock, don't worry about which one you pick. HOWEVER if you do the Second HDD mod, You might REALLY want to consider moving to Windows 8, as it doesn't cause the second HDD to turn off for no reason. Probably driver issues, but they havn't been fixed in Windows 7, so I'm sticking with Windows 8.

Windows 8 vs Windows 8.1??

Update: Choosing 8.1 is no longer an driver hunting task, if you install it under UEFI mode. So make sure your USB stick is formatted as Fat32, and copy the contents of the Win 8.1 DVD/ISO to it. Then make sure during boot, press F9 to pick the UEFI option, or just completely disable "legacy mode" in the bios.

Windows 8.1 Complete Driver Guide WIP

Update: First off, make sure you install Windows 8.1 under EUFI mode!!! Almost every single driver has been installed, and functioning properly!!! The only 3 missing can easily be found on hp's site under 8.1 (Installing under regular "bios" mode, caused me to hunt down about 10 drivers.)

Hardware Mods

SECOND HDD IN OPTICAL-BAY WORKAROUND:

Well for starters, if any of you tried to replace the optical bay with a second HDD, you'll soon learn that it wont work.

Why? This laptop has a particular power saving feature where the optical drive will use ZERO watts when not in use, this caused the bios to shut off the hard drive during boot up, preventing windows or any other OS to see or recognize the new hard-drive when booted. (Not to mention the INSANITY it caused my laptop when trying to run the UEFI diagnostics on the hard-drive.

FIX:
While booting the laptop, I ran voltage check on the power line to the optical bay, and noticed that power was cut off about 10-30 seconds into boot. I also noticed a nice steady voltage line right next to it that DIDN'T shut off. So I simply bridged the two power lines, and all has been well, for over a month.

FOR THOSE CONCERNED: The power regulator above the two pads, actually is what controls the two pads. (look at the traces) so power requirements should suffice, as I'm not just pulling power from some random place, but the same regulator that the optical bay runs off of.

One caveat, WINDOWS 7 USERS, this will work, however I had issues where once every few days my 2nd hard-drive would disappear from windows, and only a reboot (sometimes two) would get it back online, not to mention the SLOW IO (ugggghhh, that made me so mad)

Solution? Windows 8.1 (UEFI MODE!). Windows 8.1 (UEFI MODE!) is better at handling the newer amd chipsets, and has NOT given me a single issue yet.

1080p screen mod. HARDWARE/SOLDERING/CHIP REPLACEMENT MOD ONLY

UPDATE: Sorry. "Analogix ANX3112"

Unless you desolder, and replace the "Analogix" chip, this laptop is MAX capable of 1680x1050@60!!

Since, this runs off a serial/deserial setup, you COULD, remove the original chip, and replace with a 2 channel serial/deserial chip. However, it has to be a AMD "non firmware" compatible, as this chips is a "No MCU, firmware, or EEPROM required" type of chip.

Basically, get a compatible chip, install a raised add-on breadboard, and sit it on top of the original spot. This is because the new chip will most definatly have more pins, and will need room. Then match all the exsisting pins, and add in the extra cabling needed for the second channel, Then you'd have to make a custom lvds cable that has cables connected on the second lvds channel thats cut off from the connectors second lvds pins, as those pins are used for the camera and microphone.

Graphics Card Overclocking.

Download MSI afterburner beta, and in settings enable "Extend official overclocking limits" and set "Unofficial overclocking mode" to "without PowerPlay support" RESTART when it asks you too. Then run MSI Afterburner again, and have at it. You can even unlock voltage control.

SPD Tool, DOES NOT WORK. Due to very new SMBus drivers that it does not regognise. Please note this tool is no longer in development, so don't go bugging people on their forum for support, instead get "Thaiphoon Burner" (paid version)

This is ORIGINALLY an sdcard I/O chip, however, geniuses have decided to re-purpose this for the seconds sata slot, which houses the "Zero Watt" cd/dvd drive. This cause me headaches as Win 7 x64 would shut down the second hard drive when doing the hardware mod above. Moving to Win 8 x64 UEFI (only uefi) fixed this issue for me.

You mentioned 1680x1050. What screen is capable of that while still supporting the m6? My screen is cracked and I need to replace it anyways so if I can go from 1366x768 to 1680x1050 I'd love to.
