Hi there.
Please can someone help me out. I got my HP nx7010 yesterday and got the modem to dial-up properly and I connected to the Internet perfectly using two different connections. However, today it doesn't seem to work. The modem instructions respond, but I cannot get it to dial (no sound from modem). My father was trying to fix it and this is what he says:
"All I appear to have done is to set the volume of the modem to a lower setting. In so doing the modem properties "insisted" that I set the modem to have a area code (for Cape Town, South Africa, its 021) - ever since then, I get the message that the mode does not support digital and ONLY supports analog. This I do not understand. We are using tone phone lines here."
I am using Windows XP Professional.
Thanks for help in advance.

I think what this message means is that you have the phone line connected to a Digital connection like a PBX or ISDN line. They feed a lot more power than an analog phone line. This may be the problem, just re-check the connection on a different jack (on the back of unit as well) and see if it works. If not, it could be you're modem, possibly fried from a surge. If this is the case, you will need to get it replaced.

But it was working on Friday with the same cable. I'm sing the cable supplied with the laptop, which I would presume would be the correct one. I've also tried a different cable and it still doesn't work. And my father's IBM T41 works on that cable all the time, that's what I'm currently using now.
Is there any way in which I can determine if it is fried? It sometimes makes a short beep before it comes up with the error message. And when I uninstall it, it picks it up again, so does this not mean that it is still working? -
I don't think there's a way to test this other than try the unit on another phone line (not your own) at a different location. Are there any ? or ! in the device manager? Contact HP and see if they can run you through any additional tests.

I've tried another phone line, tried another cable and tried a different isp. -
I phoned the place I bought the laptop from and they helped me fix the problem. It was a really simple fix. All I had to do was enter a string in the modem's advanced options. It is apparently a problem all people in South Africa get with this modem. It is from US where they use digital lines, but here we still use analog lines. So the modem works once, but after that it doesn't because it thinks it's connected to a digital line. Very strange!
Modem not working. Please help!
