I thought I had a Montevina CPU but according to CPU Z it reports it as Penryn
what's the diff? which is better?

Montevina is the platform of which Penryn CPU's are used. Penryn CPUs are also used in Santa Rosa but only those with an 800MHZ FSB bus compatibility will get the rated speed of the CPU.
What you might mean is what is the difference between Santa Rosa (ICH8M) and Montevina (ICH9M).
The difference is the front side bus (FSB). Montevina uses a 1066MHZ FSB and can use DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. Santa Rosa uses 800MHz FSB and DDR2 RAM. Both platforms use Socket P for their processors. -
