Hi
I have an HP Pavilion dv6137tx notebook with Windows XP Media Center Edition. For some reason, I am unable to "explore" any CD/DVD in Windows. The volume label of the CD/DVD shows up in My computer, but when I double click on the icon or right click and select "Explore", I don't see the contents of the disc.
So when I insert a valid CD/DVD (which works elsewhere), it just updates the volume label and sits there. If I double click on it, nothing happens. If I right click on it and select Explore, it opens a Windows Explorer window with the Desktop as the current working directory.
When I try to write to a blank CD, I get the following error from Sonic DigitalMedia Plus v7:
Sense: 03 ASC: 0C ASCQ: 00 (Command 2A)
-------------------------------------------------------
Px.dll: 4.0.36.500
pxafs.dll: 4.0.36.500
pxdrv.dll: 1.2.9.0
PxMas.dll: 4.0.36.500
PxSFS.DLL: 4.0.36.500
PxWave.dll: 4.0.36.500
pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3
Any help, suggestions and ideas are appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
cheers
vivek

Someone?

Try the following
-Go to the Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM device
-Choose your drive and uninstall it
-Go to Options > Scan for Hardware changes
This should reload your driver.
Also check your file associations are correct. -
Thanks flipfire, but this didn't work. Any more ideas?
-
Please help
-
sorry thats all i can think off. The next thing i would do is a repair install of XP or even a clean install to rule out a software side issue
-
Well, I would've tried that but I am not at home right now, so I was hoping to be able to fix this without a clean install/repair. Anyway, thanks Flipfire.
If anyone has a solution or an idea, please post it on this thread. -
Is there something I can do to the registry to fix this?
-
Well i did a search and someone's solution was to try a different brand CD/DVD. You said u could use those same media on a different PC and it works so that might not be ur solution, but right now i think it might be worth the try. Maybe ur computer just don't like that type of CD/DVD Media.
EDIT: I don't think a registry tweak would fix this type of issue...i could be wrong though. -
The problem is not with the media. I have tried different CDs/DVDs, but the problem persists.
If a CD/DVD has an autorun feature, then the program initiated by autorun is executed successfully. But whether or not a CD/DVD has autorun, I am unable to see its contents in My Computer or Windows Explorer. -
These instructions worked for someone else with the same problem, you may want to give them a try.
Goto Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager.
Click on View, choose devices by connection.
Expand the ATI IDE Controller
Expand the Primary IDE Channel
Make sure your CD/DVD drive is listed under the expanded IDE Controller.
Double Click the Primary IDE Channel
Click on Advanced Settings Tab
Change the transfer mode for Device 0 from "DMA if available" to "PIO only"
Click OK -
Have you tried disconnecting the CD/DVD drive? You may not be able to, but it could be a lose connector. Worth a shot.
-
Thanks deeastman and kapblp.
kapblb, if it were a loose connection, the CD/DVD drive would not work at all. My problem is that I cannot use My Computer or Windows Explorer to browse ANY CD or DVD.
Btw, both My Computer and Windows Explorer show the contents of the CD/DVD in Safe Mode.
I am very sure I have no spyware or adware (thats what HP attributed as the cause) and I have cleaned my system meticulously. -
your optical drive will stick out if it was loose hehe
well unless you wanna go fishing for the exact problem, i suggest doing a repair install -
-
I could've done a repair install if I had access to the recovery DVDs..which are at home (whereas I'm not
). So I want to try and fix this problem without reinstalling the OS.
-
no no you misunderstood me.. not a recovery install.
A repair install. It will just repair your system files, all your stuff will still be there. You need the XP disc to do this -

You may want to read all the info and try the one post where deleting the upper and lower filters is mentioned. The last post in the thread is the fix I posted and cured his problem. I once had to delete the filters myself to get my drives to be recognized. I know recognition is not your problem but it couldn't hurt and this will be my last suggestion as I am out of ideas. If you happen to have some version of Roxio installed you may want to uninstall it for now. Roxio CD/DVD Creator has caused me several problems with CD/DVD drives not performing as they should or not at all. -
The fact that u can see the contents of the CD/DVD in Safe Mode means that there is some sort of uneccessary service/program that's running when u log on normally. So when HP talks about spyware/ad-aware i can understand why. I personally don't believe that u can clean ur system to a perfect T. No matter what scanners u use...I say seeing that you might not be aware of something such as spyware or w/e on ur system...just do a re-install and save the headache.

Hi guys. I got your point Flipfire, but I don't have a genuine Windows XP DVD as such...if you ask me to repair, I'd just pop in the recovery DVDs and reinstall...from square one. But I want to avoid that.
