Hi guys, I just proceeded a W7 clean install. I installed all the important drivers of HP. I also installed the last firmware for the Seagate Momentus XT. I notice that now the fan turn a lot. Even during a simple data transfer, or data downloading, the fan turn on max, as if I played Starcraft 2 in Ultra settings, lol.

So I wonder if I forget some drivers which regular the fan, or it is because of the new hard drive which run hotter than normal 500GB 7200 Seagate.

Windows boot time is about 27 sec with Momentus XT. Since I don't notice the boot time before this, I cannot say if I get an improvement or not.

What do you think about the fan? Thank you in advance.

how long has it been since you reformatted and clean installed?

Windows 7 usually takes a week or so to index things and that causes it to use the processor at around 33-40% (which would make the fan come on since things are heating up)

Mine does the same thing - I can hear it ramping up and down constantly when I've got it sitting on the table. I did my clean install last week.

I disabled fan always on in BIOS, will have to pay attention to it to see if it makes a difference.

Turning off the "fan always on" in the BIOS didn't do anything for me. Except then the fan ramped up for several seconds, then ramped down again for several seconds.

Hmm, good to know. I did a clean install and reflashed my bios, and could of sworn the fan was louder, and always on. Thanks for the info. I was really hoping the envy 14 would be quieter, here's hoping it is!

I find that Fan Always On - 'On' lets the fan spin quietly slowley whilst just surfing the net, ramps to full speed if doing something with more CPU or graphicaly intense.

And Fan Always On - 'Off" lets the fan stay off when idle, but you will be shocked when it does finally kick in if you start to do something, it kicks in full blast and loud, then off and on and off and on every minute, full blast to cool, then off again. very annoying.

What is the "Fan Always on" option when people receive their laptop from factory? Is it On or Off?

Do you mean that it is better to keep this option On than Off? Because indeed, I can hear the ramping up and down constantly even when I surf on internet, or downloading updates, and that is very noisy. Is it because of the fact we disable "Fan Always On" option? that is not reasonable, lol/
