I connected a PS/2 mouse to a usb port using a ps2/usb adapter adapter. The V2000 won't see it, I think lists it as an unknow device in device mgr??? Tried to install drivers but got a warning that I would have to remove the synaptic drivers so I stopped.

You will have to remove the touchpad drivers because it is connected through ps/2 port, too. I would uninstall the synaptic drivers (the touchpad will still work with WinXP's drivers) and see if the new mouse works. If it does, maybe reinstall the synaptic drivers; after the new installation they may find compatibility with the new mouse because they will see it upon install.

Ok, I installed the drivers but it still does not work - the touchpad does. I am plugged into a usb port using the ps/2 to usb adapter supplied by microsoft with the mouse. Under usb in device mgr there is an unknown device. Pehaps I need a straight through usb mouse?

It must be a USB mouse even if you are using a USB to PS/2 converter. If your mouse is USB compatible it will just work W/O any drivers installed.

It looks like the USB plug you are using came with your mouse so it is in fact a USB and PS/2 mouse. It must be a hardware problem with your mouse then. I would return it.

I am posting this for the benefit of others who may try to use a PS/2 mouse in a USB port, as it is not obvious this will not work with those small USB to PS/2 port adapters.

There are however USB devices that have PS/2 circuitry built in and do allow you to use PS/2 only devices. These can be recognized, as they will have a large case or box in the middle of the cord that houses the circuitry that does the conversion.

    I hope this makes sense.

You do not want to use a native PS/2 mouse on your laptop. Makes using the built-in touchpad less effective when needed.

I would just spring the $30 to get a notebook mouse. I just got a Logitech Mini Cordless Mouse and it works like a dream.

This afternoon I picked up a $30 Kengsington mini cordless and it works perfect too. Power button sucks though, you need a paper clip, so we'll see how the batteries last... thanks for all the responses..

Btw, the mouse didnt work in my desktop either. I assumed any ps/2 would work with the adapter. Same issue with keyboard.

if u got fifty bucks to spare i'd say get the v500 it works great =) i love the v500 only problem is that i tend to leave my finger on the middle alot and since it uses sensors i always hear CLICK CLICK CLICK, it imitates the sound of a mouse scrolling

is the v500 a logitech mouse??? i know any usb mouse will work - i was asking about the kvm switch --- anyway, already placed the order for a slightly cheaper different version than the one above, no sound - which i dont need and read doesnt work so great anyway
