Is the mute button light supposed to turn red when you turn off the sound. I seem to recall that is does, though I can be wrong. I updated the driver as part of a Windows Update and it stays blue, even when the sound is muted. The system tray icon works fine.

    Thanks.

Thank you. I reinstalled the driver and the light is working correctly again.

I don't know why whenever I do a windows update, which is fully automatic, my machine is often worse off than before the update.

When doing a clean install of Vista, I noticed the included sound driver does not switch the mute button colour. However, an update from Windows corrects the issue and allows the light to change blue/red. Oddly enough, the update is not the sound driver, it's the modem driver which includes some chipset drivers for the motherboard.

If you have the original HP drivers installed, Windows Update may not properly select a driver since the HP driver should take priority. HP releases regular updates that includes Windows updates that should work fine with HP drivers, but I've heard that isn't always the case.

Just another reason to do a clean install and avoid the unnecessary HP bloatware.
