Nothing happened to the laptop, but the screen displays fine on the top half of the LCD displays completely fine and the bottom half is gray and doesn't display. I read about the problem and it sounds like the inverter board is dead. So I took the LCD off and removed the board. It looks fine but I have no way to test it. Nowhere around here sells the part it needs to be ordered online as far as I know. So is there a way I can test it before I buy a new one or do you think it's fine and the LCD is bad?

The inverter just powers the backlight so that's not the problem. Most likely it's the LCD, maybe the LCD cable, but assuming you have a NVIDIA GPU:

you may be able to get HP to repair it for free. For all we know it could be the GPU starting to fail. -
Plug an external monitor in, if it shows up on the external monitor aswell then its your gpu.
If it doesn't, then its either your LCD or Cable.
My DV6000 screen isn't working properly. Half is black half displays fine.
