Well everyone, I reported in a thread about my lcd "Flickering" like a florescent bulb is going out. Well the other day, I went to use my laptop and no screen! I could see the desktop just a little because of my room lighting. I restarted the computer and it came back on! I called HP and went through all there tech support, upgrading bios, reinstalling video driver.. All seemed well until later that day, the same thing happened! So I called again. This time I told them I believe the back light is bad. They had me restart the computer again and it was back on.. But this time I told the rep it wasn't. I don't know if its the LCD itself, the back light or the video card? Anyways, they are having me send it in for repair.
What does it sound like to you guys? I have had other laptops before, but none of them ever did this!.. Thanks Tryton

My dv6000t is suffering the same problem. HP has sent me the box, but school made me hold back the mail-in repair.
I believe the problem is with both the video card, and the backlight. First, it flickered like your screen, so there should be a loose wire connection from the power source to the backlight, or the controller of the backlight. Second, sometimes, 2/3 of the bottom of my screen displayed not the content of my desktop, but somekind of spectrum stripes (though not in the order of spectra), so that should be the video card problem.

if video still appears while the screen is dim it's most likely the backlight, the video still being there shows that there's most likely nothing wrong with the card. i could be wrong though

I agree with Kornkid. Gotta be the backlight, the backlight connection, or the inverter.

yeah, I'm thinking that as well, like I said, it still works but more and more I'm getting that black screen. Will they replace lcd or fix back light? I have the 17" ultrabright Screen.

I'm not getting a black screen, rather it's some stripes of colors, like an old TV with no signal. 1/3 of the upper screen still displays normally. In my case, the display is also wrong, not just the backlight.

On further inspection, it seems when my laptop goes into it's "Turn off screen after 20 minutes" is when the blank screen is occurring. I have the power settings adjusted to High performance. So basically, after 20 minutes, when the screen turns off. You press a key and I see a flicker, then nothing. Like I said previously, you can still see the desktop via room lighting but no back light. I had to press the power button to make it go into standby then wake it back up to get the monitor back.. Anyone know what might cause this? Thanks Again..

i had a similar problem... maybe this helps..

Last year i sent my zd7000 in for repair because my screen would just go black as if off, the only way to fix it would be to restart the computer or hibernate. I thought it was the lcd so when they "repaired" it i got it back and the first time i booted it had the SAME problem so replacing the lcd was not a solution. Then i sent it back one more time this time they replaced the video card i got it back and it had the same problem again. I sent it back for the third time and this time they replaced the motherboard (i asked for a replacement and they said that was impossible and out of the question :( ). This solved the problem, one year later im still using this computer and all works just fine... maybe this can help a bit maybe not..

Many times before, when I went to turn it back on from hibernate the screen wouldn't turn back on, but I've seen that with a lot of other laptops before.

My 6 month old dv9000t has recently started doing the same thing. I'm not sure if it was just coincidence or if it was directly related, but my back light started going out when I started connecting it to my Samsung Tv via HDMI to watch movies. When I would connect it to the TV I would keep it on the mode where it only showed on the TV and not on the laptop display. I also got the ultra bright screen with 2 back light bulbs and in the past week my back light has been staying off almost every time I turn on the computer, resume from hibernate, or even restarting it multiple times. I know its the back light because if I turn my screen at an angle I can still kinda see whats there, also a trick I've learned is if you get a flash light and put it on the screen you can clearly see whats there allowing me to me try and get it working via software changes rather then through restarting it over and over again.
I've tried a few things to get the back light to turn back on, for one, if you keep changing the resolution on the screen the back light will sometimes turn back on or flicker at the very least. This doesn't always work but it can be a quick temporary fix. Also If I turn off the computer then turn it on via QuickPlay then the back light usually turns on to, from which I can go to windows.

I have yet to find a permanent fix and fear that I'm going to end up calling HP for a replacement. But to tell you the truth I have a strong feeling that this is more of a software issue rather then hardware. Havn't tried a reinstall yet (it still has its original installation on there), because I don't want to provide HP support with BS excuses as to why it stopped working.

If anyone has a similar experience I would be very interested in hearing it, so maybe we can compare what happen and find a method of fixing this without having to send out to HP.

    relevent laptop specs:
    Dv9000t
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
    NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 256mb
    DirectX Version 9.0c
Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T5600

    *** UPDATE***
I need to let everyone here know how Happy I am with my repair as well as the speed it took hp to fix ALL The Issues. I received the "Coffin" on the 24th. I decided to keep the laptop over the weekend and then ship it out on Monday. They overnighted the box! I sent it back on Monday and they received it on Tuesday the 28th. Again, they paid for overnighting the laptop to them. Besides the LCD issue. I had two other issues that I wanted fixed since they were small I didn't want to loose my laptop just to fix them. One was the mute button on the quick play never worked since day one. not even a beep when you touched it. the second small issue I was having was the space bar on the keyboard was very unresponsive. sometimes it would space, and other times it didn't. Well I just got my laptop back Today the 31st! at 10:00am est and they replaced the entire LCD Screen, Fixed the mute button by replacing some board, and replaced the whole keyboard! I must tell you I didn't expect the turn around so fast. I have no extended warranty, just the one that came with the laptop, and after reading some stories here I wasn't expecting it for a few weeks.. And you know what?? They didn't even wipe out the HD!! I must say this has been the BEST Experience in dealing with my first (And hopefully last) Warranty repair.. Thanks everyone for all your help Tryton

I have the same problem with my dv9500t, and i just noticed that when i moved the display up and down it would flicker on then off. I am guessing that the connector is loose? Is it hard to open it and check the connector? I didn't have this problem until i sent it in for repair (they replaced the system board and video card) I think they left the connctor loose. My waranty just ran out last month :(
