Hey everyone. At this moment Im currently writing this message at an internet/manga cafe in Japan.....let me tell you why. I was using my laptop at a coffee shop and (apparently) I closed my notebook lid and forgot to shut down the laptop. Anyway, I put the laptop in my bag and went home. When I got home the laptop was RED HOT and the screen was black. When I tried to start it again, the HP logo came upt Windows failed start. When I tried to do ``repair`` the computer couldnt bring up any OS files at all to do the repair, so the hard drive is definitely fryed. I confirmed this by running ``start up test`` from the opening screen. Secondary hard disk and memory test came up normal but when I ran the ``primary`` hard disk test, it immediately says ``replace hard disk``. So, I know my hard drive is dead and I`m really hoping its only the hard drive and not my whole motherboard. Is there a way to check if the rest of the computer is affected besides the hard drive? Because thats what I`m really worried about. Any comment or suggestions would be extremely helpful cause I`m freaking out right now....

Seeing as your notebook didnt automatically shut off from overheating, your cpu and gpu are fine.
Your HD most likely died from shock, vibrations and heat. HD's are very sensitive to the first two. -
Also, the night before I overclocked my gpu a bit (only on 3d performance and I DIDNT play any games at the coffee shop).....never turned off and ran smoothly the night before......but do you think that had anything to do with it? -
Yes your thermal zone (cpu/gpu) has a temperature protection to when it will shut off. Seeing as it was still on, your CPU/GPU wasnt overheating dangerously. Your HD would actually still be alive if it thermally shut off from no cooling.
Sounds like the HD is severely corrupted from shock. I dont think you will be able to retrieve it using standard HD programs. You will need to get proffesionals to retrieve the hard data for you.
Next time set your notebook to automatically sleep after a certain amount of time or when the lid is closed. -
Really appreciate your help. +1 rep
