    Hi,
    I have a new DV2000T with a HL-DT-ST 4084N DVDRW LightScribe drive.

The drive showed up fine in Windows XP and worked fine when I got my laptop.

I went to Windows Update and installed a lot of updates. I did some other stuff (surfing, activating the Office trial, etc, etc) and noticed a few days later my DVD drive had disappeared from Windows!

Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark next to the device with error Code 39. "Windows can not load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing."

Windows will not let me Roll Back the driver, and is unable to find a new driver using Update Driver.

Please help! Any ideas what happened or how to fix it?

    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the replies.
What driver under "SWSetup" would I select? I tried some but none were the DVD/CD driver.
I just tried uninstalling the IDE (& SATA) drivers via Device Manager and rebooting... no luck. Still the same error for DVD drive.

Any other tips and advice greatly appreciated.

    ughhh...

    Thanks!

HP user, this is EXACTLY what happened to my dv6000 recently.
Nothing helped. I tried everything from the SWSetup folder. It seemed to take the driver at first, but then it gave me the error that the driver cannot be accepted, or something, and CODE 39.
The only thing that helped was to restore the windows back to one of the oldest restore points. I first tried restoring it to the most recent one, but the problem was still there. I then chose the next one from that, but still i had the problem. But, as i already said, then restoring it to one of the oldest ones did the job.
What i did now was, i took all the DVD-ROM drivers from System32 and System 32/Drivers folder and backed them up, so that the next time the same thing happens, i will just try replacing the drivers with the backed up ones.

When i was having the problem with my DVD-ROM, then i did not try that Registry method, but i did try Method 2: Replace the existing driver, and that did absolutely nothing.

This happened with my NC 8430. After some investigation, I found that one of the drivers in the hp update email was the cause, so I did progressive restores until it cleared. It is a real pain as you have to drop into safe mode to do a proper restore, but it sure beats reloading the system.

    Yay! That worked. Thanks!!

I didn't have an "upperfilter" so essentially this one step made my DVD drive "reappear."

    7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

some aspects of Windows I'll never understand...

    thanks, mo

Now the only thing left is to understand what caused the problem in case it reappears.
