Whether I'm downloading a movie or doing something else, when I leave my computer on and unattended, it sometimes turn off by itself and when I turn it back on, it says that it has recovered from an unexpected error. Does anyone have any clue why my laptop does this? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
My best guess would be overheating - does it tend to run hot?
I've only had my E14 approach overheating temps a couple times, but I've had previous computers crippled by overheating issues until I realized what was wrong. A (sometimes) simple fan and heatsink cleaning made all the difference. -
How would you clean the heatsink? -
If it gets too hot, the computer gives a BIOS warning upon the next startup. I think it has something to do with Windows

I know this is an older thread...but I'm having the same issue where the laptop would just power off (it's like as if someone pull the power cord and yank the battery out). Restart the computer and windows will say it didn't shutdown properly.
Anyways, the Envy 14 (purchased Nov '10) went back to HP on June 6, they attempted to fix it, return it back on June 25. Within 5 hrs of use, it powered off by itself again (HP did not fix it). The work order said they replaced the WLAN card. !?! Called them up, mailed the laptop back on June 29th and now they say I should have it back on or before July 20.
Mind you, I have extended warranty and on-site service. I still have to send the laptop back because (apparently) HP does not do on-site for mobo. I can tell you Dell will replace LCD panel, mobo via on-site... and the guy can do it in 15min flat.
Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in how this ordeal is being handled by HP. What do you guys think? What are some options? Can I get HP to replace the laptop (really tired of waiting for weeks at a time not know they'll be able to fix it) or refund my money so I can go buy something else?
BTW, a colleague told me this is one example why so many frustrated Windows users are going to Apple. I am sure Apple devices have their issues, but certainly doesn't help HP or Windows. -
It might just be a loose connector or something, but it's most likely the mobo. Hopefully this time they'll replace the mobo, but if they can't see anything wrong with the computer immediately usually they won't fix anything. Writing a short report to the tech and including it with your laptop tends to help IMO. HP has a few really bad techs, but others will actually pay attention. It depends on which one you get :/
Over on the apple forums 90C on the CPU is acceptable.
My Envy 14 keeps turning off by itself.
