Crimsoned, here is one option, altough rare to work try it, since you don't really want to send the Envy back right?Tell your Case Manager, who should have the power to send you a proper, brand new Envy 17 SB configured the way you ordered it, in 100% perfect condition, inspected and delivered to you in the most expidiated fashion possible. In the meantime while its being built, the Case Manager will allow you to continue using your current problematic Envy and only send it back once you receive the functional replacement.
You'd think if your CM is that awesome to do that for you, than why not keep a perfect Envy?Hope this plan works out for you. Please let us know.

I still need to send my i7-720QM Envy 17 back, which I will do on Monday as I have several things to ship that I sold. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Hopefully you will avoid HP for future reference.
I indeed service alot of HPs for overheating. They never seem to get the cooling system right, always been flawed all the way to the dvx000 series.
Although HP is always very quick with their warranty repairs and ship some of the fastest replacement SR parts.
Am I assuming you bought an Envy for entertainment purposes? -

Alrighty something is odd with my unit, I am unsure what's going on to be exact however it seems to be related with the power supply, motherboard or GPU.
I started noticing major throttles while gaming, and by major I mean to the point the laptop would not respond to most actions. I suspect it's a bad motherboard or GPU. Whether it's caused by BIOS doing thermal throttling is not a possibility.
I ran Furmark and Prime 95 on blend test. The results showed temperatures do no seem to have a factor in when the throttling starts, however it clearly indicates severe throttling is going on.
Temperatures for the GPU venture between 82c with a max of 89c~. Averaging more along 83c-84c.
Throttling occurs anywhere between 81c-90c. One could suspect a time triggered thermal throttled however once throttling begins, temperatures begin to drop rapidly down to around 72c~ and lower. Throttling is still going on at this time.
I know of no thermal throttling that does that. Usually a throttle is very minimal for a somewhat long period of time, and sometimes severe but very short. But as soon temperatures go back to safety the throttling should stop almost immediately. But is not stopping it can continue for an unknown amount of time.
This type of issue can occur from 2 likely and 1 possible scenarios. Power supply, and Motherboard. The more likely candidate is the motherboard since even if the power supply begins to loose efficiency, the battery should have been enough to keep the laptop from throttling that far down.
I am going to test the previous Envy's power supply to see if the same thing happens. I think I have my mind set to just having it repaired, then selling it. -
Alright diagnosis complete, it's definitely the Power supply. Used the previous one and it worked like a charm.
-
I would imagine HP will not give you an issue sending you a new power supply as they are giving such a hard time to slotti for a replacement of defective 3D glasses.

Once again in conclusion:
I highly recommend as a computer technician to avoid all of HP's consumer laptops, and desktops. Their support, quality control (Envy being their top of the line) are all subpar compared to other manufacturers, hell even Dell's consumer line isn't this bad.
I am done playing the wait until HP fixes game. Back to the market to find me another suitable replacement. -
Alright I decided to get the laptop repaired and pass it off to a cousin (Who instead got my sister's Fujitsu).
I got a call today, they are offering a replacement within this week (27th or 28th) with a hard drive upgrade 2x 640gb~ (perhaps 7200RPM?) and a processor upgrade to the i7-2820QM. Rest of specs I assume will be the same.
How are they going to do it within this week is beyond me (perhaps Quick ship? or maybe HP keeps a stock of premade on hand just in case these situations), but the guy told me the tech who was shipping the laptop was going to try going for overnight, so I could have it by the 27th or 28th.
Honestly if they really pull through this week, PLUS no defects on the new laptop I am seriously going to be amazed. -
Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
This is the main reason I didn't get an ENVY17, because of the cooling issues. I think I'll just avoid HP from now on, though I was happy with my previous two laptops, both HP.
I have found that if you chat with their rep online, that would be a much more palatable experience...but it's not important because I'm done with HP. Never mind if my uncle can get me an employee discount
Well...never say never. All right, at least until HP is in the top 3 for CS. But even then that's nowhere near the personal level of service I am getting from my Sager reseller...
