One day, I was doing the average stuff, playing games and surfing the web for about an hour. All of a sudden, my screen freezes. A bit later, I hear a pop in the speakers and my laptop reboots.

    What just happened there?

I asked a friend and he said it might have been because the graphics card overheated. I was using the laptop on a bed, but it was on Power Saver mode and charging, so I wasn't sure that would be it.

    Anyone know?

And if it is the graphics card overheating, what do I do / how do I know that the GPU is okay?

    T7300 2.0 GHz
    2GB RAM
    8600M GS
    160 GB x 2 HDD 5400 RPM

    Thanks.

well if you used your laptop to write this message than your gpu is ok because you wouldnt be able to see naything on the screen if it was a broken gpu.

it could of been overheating but i just think it was a software malfunction, just the operating system....but obviously i cant be 100% sure

not a blue screen? The pop sound is most likely just from the speakers.

but i reckon it was a trojan or a hacker cookie virus thingo. Hackers can remotely control your computer. shutting it down even.

Go and download a temperature monitoring program (such as speedfan, but you can do a google on temperature monitoring programs), and while your using your computer check the temperature every now and then. As Kickace said, if your GPU went out then you wouldn't be able to see anything on the LCD. The pop from your speakers could have just been a glitch because the computer rebooted.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that its a virus or from a hacker, we don't have enough info for that and its rather unlikely that happened. Just monitor your temps, and keep an eye on your laptop for any unusual activity. Keep us updated on anything new that happens and we can help out if anything new happens.

I don't think it was a virus or anything, since I have a pretty good firewall and antivirus software.

This is the first time it has happened, as far as I can tell. It may have happened one other time, but if it did, it as most likely a few months ago, around when I first got my laptop.

    Thanks for the help.

Hmmm, I have that problem as well. Mine also went into a "permanent sleep state" after i unplugged the power cord in sleep after i was finished charging it.
