I had this thing running on a tablet OS (don't ask me why) and it didn't work then, but I dont blame it, NOW I got it running WinXP SP2 and it STILL doesn't run DVD+R's. Am I missing a driver or something? I looked for one at HP.com but they didn't have any. Can this thing even run DVD+R's? If so, what do I need to do? All answers are appreciated :D

If your drive isn't a DVD+/-RW drive, it won't work. You need to check your specific notebook product number for the specs.

I find it tough to digest the logic that you have proposed chrixx. What kind of DVD will the drive read if it isn't DVD+/- RW and can't read DVD R's either?

I meant not knowing what kind of drive the OP's notebook came with, we're not sure if it will even work.

thank you guys for your answers. i went to device manager and looked at my cd/dvd drives. One says "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4246N". I usually rip movies with this laptop, so i know DVD-Rs work..... hope that helps

So the firmware update doesn't help? What brand of discs do you have?

Sorry mate, wish I could help further, but I don't have that same notebook nor had encountered any similar problems with mine.
A full OS recovery may help, as some here have seen. It seems like there's a bug in the software or some conflict that causes the DVD drive to fail at times.
