    My HP problem! Read this!

    I have had my hp dv6000t laptop for about a month now. I have all my favorite programs installed, tons of important pictures, over 6 gb of music, movies, tv shows, etc on it. I almost filled the whole 80 gb HD. One day i was playing gunz on my computer, having fun. The next day i was so excited to come home and play gunz on my new computer.

    I turned it on and the black screen came up. I chose to start it normal and a blue screen came up when it was booting up. I tried it in safe mode. same thing. I tried doing a disk self check. same thing. i even did a disruptive recovery because i was so desperate, and then i later realized that that deleted all of my files and programs. I seriously started to cry. The blue screen problem was not fixed, and I was pretty sure that all of my files were gone.

    So i emailed HP with my problem. waited a couple hours and they finally replied. did not answer my question. decided to call hp. waited like an hour. talked to this dude that could not speak english well. (wat a surprise, huh?) he told me to do the things that i already did. he did not know wat to do, because the blue screen would still come up when it was booting up, then it would restart. then he told me that i would have to ship it back and they would fix it. so hp will call me tomorrow and send me the box to ship it back.

    wat a bummer, my new computer has SOOOO much programs and files that i worked so hard and waited so long to download. did not backup my files either, stupid me. my pictures, my full games (HL2), my full antivirus, all of my pictures, all of my music (i had a ton), all of my movies (i had like 10 that i downloaded), all of my tv shows (i had the whole 17 season of the simpsons), ALL GONE. and now i have to wait and ship it back. wow.

    well at least my vista upgrade will be shipped to me soon, and i can just start over with my computer, with vista installed.

    Well, that's almost like what happened to me...my dv5000t's MoBo and HDD fried and I lost everything. I was lucky in that I had most of my file scattered on my backup disks, iPod, other computers, etc so the loss was minimal. The only thing I can tell you is to backup, backup, and backup. It'll be the best thing you'll ever do for you computer. As for the recovery, it does format your HDD, which means all data is lost. Not something to be done lightly. Hope you have better luck with you "new" computer.

    I'm sorry you had that happen. But I think it does help show the importance of doing regular backups. If you need to wipe your drive to send in for repairs, or you get a virus/spyware infestation, or your system crashes, it really does save a lot of time and frustration.

    It's not too painful to do if you let it run overnight. And backups actually go a lot quicker than they used to. I have 2 external drives (one for desktop, one for NB) with two partitions each: one for backups of the system image, and one for backups of files only. I do a system image once a month and backup my files once a week at night.

    I share your frustration with HP customer service. It's one reason I won't by another one from them. They're poorly informed and not really helpful. Well, if you're only problem is that you forgot to plug your computer into a socket, they might be helpful.

    yah thanks, but a little late

    i had very few pics that i backed up on my 246 mb flash drive, at least the important ones. i also have SOME of my music backed up on my psp, and a couple other important files on my other laptop, but for some reason i was stupid anc cut and pasted all of my files and put them on my new computer and did not back them up. well at least i got some of my files backed up.

    Since HP's phone-in support is so bad, I'm baffled as to how they become the biggest PC manufacturer? Surely, people must have turned to other brands by now that offer local phone support (Dell, Apple, etc.)? Looking at the number of complaints, I expect 90% of phone support do nothing to solve the problem (even software related ones), and eventually, HP would need to bear the cost of having a local technician fix the system.

    Well, you could boot the computer from a bootable rescue cd like knoppix or acronis and backup critical data onto DVD's or external USB hdd's.

    If you have another computer available, buy a copy of r-studio ( www.r-studio.com) and use their "emergency assistant" to boot the failed machine and then create an image of your failed drive....I'm assuming you have a wireless or wired network available to you.

    This works. I've done it multiple times. With r-studio, you can often recover files from the image, regardless of whether they've been deleted or not, and it can recover corrupted files like no other tool I've come across.

    I like my A8JP a lot. I wanted a notebook that would last a few years. Used mainly for work, email, surfing, and some gaming. Nothing intense. I had to do a clean install of the system when I got it (problems out of the box), but have had no problems since then.

    I got mine from NewEgg. I think shipping price was around $1,300. Then upgraded RAM to 2GB for about another 200.

    Possible downsides: battery life (2.5 hours) and some folks complain of graininess or sparkliness on the screen. The complaints seem to be a small percentage of buyers though. Asus has a 2-year warranty on parts, so that's a another plus.

    I feel your pain. I spent hours installing software, updates, etc. First, my dv6000 series had a problem of starting by itself. However, it didn't load in Windows but just beeped, whined and got hot. Tech support was of no help. A couple of members on this forum suggested upgrading the BIOS, which solved their similar problem. Strangely, the check and update software on the computer never indicated a BIOS update. I found that my BIOS was about 5 issues behind. I installed the BIOS and this problem "seemed" fixed. I then attached the notebook to the HP docking station and attached a 19 lcd monitor to the VGA out on the dock. I installed the driver for the monitor and then hit Fn- f4 to toggle the display. The external monitor display was terrific with even the correct resolution and color profile. However, I soon discovered that I couldn't revive the display on the notebook no what I tried. Several hours with tech support was fruitless and frustrating. Finally, I got the OK to send it in for warranty repairs. I do have a "clone" of C using Norton Ghost so I should be able to restore everything if no hardware is changed with something else. However, I am afraid that HP will send a new or repaired notebook with Vista, which won't work with the Ghost clone and leave me with 2 very nice photo printers, and a slide/film scanner that don't have Vista drivers...to my knowledge. HP has been quite a disappointment. I hope the repair can improve their image in my mind.

    Well, at this point, unless your notebook isn't "officially supported" by HP for vista, it's probably a safe bet that it's gonna be vista installed.

    wait so i can get my files back!!!!!!!!?????

    oh and i dont think they will put vista back on it when i return it.... i am supposed to get the upgrade in the mail soon, so yah

    but if i can fix it and get all my files back, then i wont need to ship it back. if i can, please tell me exactly how to do it! im pretty sure i cant because i did a destructive recovery.... :(

    they will call me today from 4-8 and ill talk to them and they will be shipping a box to me to ship it back, at their cost of course... my computer is only 1 month old!!!!

    If you did a destructive recovery, then the files are probably not recoverable, unfortunately.

    And sorry to hear about your problem, Matt. Sounds like a weird one...

    There are programs you can buy that can try to recover files from a disk crash, so they might be able to recover from a destructive re-install. But basically for us home users, once data is overwritten, it's gone.

    This program: http://www.filerecoveryangel.com/, claims it can recover files from a "disk formatted". The English on the site is slightly stilted, so don't know how reliable it is.

    It's very hard to say. Usually, if you just deleted a partition or formatted a drive then most of the data should be recoverable, but if you did a recovery and overwrote the data, then, chances are a portion or all of your data might be gone forever or corrupted.

    yah im pretty sure i cant recover the files, they even said that i couldnt if i did a disruptive recovery, which is wat i did

    o well hopefully they will just give me a new computer with vista already installed, when i ship it back :D

    YEY I GOT MY COMPUTER, EALIER THEN EXPECTED!!!

    i send it on tuesday, it shipped and then got it on wednesday. on that day they fixed it and shipped it back. so i got it when i got home!

    now to do the ever-lasting, huge task of re-installing all of my crap and stuff...
