    My Hp laptop doesnt always mute the speakers when i plug in the headphones. any ideas?

    bad 1/4 inch receptacle maybe on your laptop..the only thing i can see that would be simple.

    What model number? If it is recent one that came with Vista and you downgraded to XP, this is most likely due to the driver you installed not being fully XP compatible.

    its a DV2054EA running on XP home edition. any ideas to resolve the bad 1/4 inch receptacle?

    Exactly. That was my issue. That last little bit can take quite a push and that is what gets the speakers cut off. If you are hearing the headphones and speakers at the same time, either are not getting the plug pushed in far enough or your receptacle/port is broken.

    After making this mistake and not realizing the issue until my fellow airplane passengers were giving me a dirty look, I now try to remember to always double check that the speakers are killed.
