My complete XP Media Edition 05 Clean install on dv8000t

AND YES, I HAVE COMPLETE QUICKPLAY DIRECT 2.0 funtions. The system will boot into dvd play mode without booting into xp first.

This guide will not be as in-depth as others because I used 2 guides to guide me thru the whole process. I will just do the highlights but it is highly recommended that you print out both guides and use them as you see fit. The following links will give you the correct guides:

    PREPARTION

Please follow either guide on backing up your HP recovery data. Please take the time and make the 4 dvd to save you time if you mess up.

(MDesigner guide for the dv8000t) Excellent guide to use. You will need the guide listed below to help with something things that this guide doesn’t cover or cannot get done. Please choose the first page to get the guide.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=66666

(Superman23 guide) Although this guide is not for the dv8000t specifically, it works on the dv8000t. Excellent guide to get quickplay 2.0 to work.

First, you need all the correct disc’s before you even consider starting. You need the operating system CD (I used the one that I spent $10.00 from HP and it is the complete XP operating system with media edition 05. If you use a retail XP you might have some issues with the install when you come to the end of it. Not proven but might be the case.

You will then need to follow either guide and copy your SWSETUP folder to a cd!! I cannot emphasize this step enough. DO IT FIRST!

If you have the operating system cd you will skip step 3 and 4 on Superman23 guide. If you do not have the cd, try his guide step 3 and 4.

Secondly, You need to get the quickplay 2.0 installation CD. Follow Superman23 guide to get it. PLEASE NOTE: when you get to the site and locate the small text, you will see it twice on the page. Click on the text that is half way down the page and to the far right. DO NOT CLICK on the link that is at the bottom of the page. The file is pretty big but worth the download time. Once you get burn on cd and you ready to go.

Third, If you using the cd you got from HP you should not need to obtain the windows XP product key during installation. I did the install and did not get asked for CD key once. To play it safe, following Superman23 guide and the link and get the key and have it handy incase you do need it.

    INSTALL WINDOWS

Either guide will suit you fine on the beginning part of installing XP but, CRUCIAL!--> Enter the bios even before you put the xp cd into the drive and disable SATA Native support. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSATLL XP! Save your bio changes and exit bios.

Now put in the XP cd and begin the install process. No need to hit F6 to add sata support since you follow MDesigner guide and be able to update the drivers via XP device manager.

When you get to the screen on where you want to install XP directory you will have to do some decision making. If you want QUICKPLAY DIRECT 2.0 function you must leave 1028mb UNALLOCATED SPACE. If you are doing this for the first time (from factory default) you should see 3 partitions. One will have the oper sys on it, another will have the hp recovery files and the 3rd partition will be 1028 unallocated space. DELETE the oper sys partition and the hp recovery partition. This should create one big unformatted partition and the 1028mb unallocated partition. Format the huge partition and DO NOT TOUCH the 1028mb. AGAIN, LEAVE ALONE!

Edit 7/31/06: Again, Everyone is asking me about the allocation space and I am glad to help everyone out there. Please just keep in the back of your head that you MUST and I mean MUST leave the 1028 UNALLOCATED SPACE UNTOUCHED during the install process. Pretend that it is not even there. DO not delete or format the Unallocated Space.

If you do not care for QUICKPLAY 2.0 then destroy all partitions and combine into one huge partition.

If you are going to partition your drive do not do it now. Get everything working first then use a 3rd party tool to safely partition the huge partition. If you decide to use xp to partition the drive before you install you may break the quickplay feature regardless if you leave 1028 mb for it.

DO A FULL FORMAT DO NOT DO QUICK FORMAT. Will take a lot longer but go get something drink or eat and comeback later to continue. You will not regret it.

Follow the rest of the installation of XP. Everything should go rather easy and XP will up and running in under 20 minutes after the format.

Restart windows and reneter into the bios and enable the SATA NATIVE SUPPORT. Save and renter into XP.

    DRIVER TIME

Both guides explain the install of all the drivers very well. MDesigner guide is incredible. Take the time and really read it and use it well. His step 21 thru the end are invaluable information.

Both guides did leave out the audio issue that you might come across. I had the install done and had sound but after going to bed and thinking I had no issues at all I was brought crashing down from my cloud nine with a issue that I thought would not be an issue. It is the audio driver. Follow MDesinger guide and you will have audio somewhat. I installed the quickplay buttons software and all worked except for the volume controls and the mute button. They would not work. The reason is that I did not have the correct drivers installed. After you follow the guide you will go to change settings and choice sound, speech, and audio devices and you should see that the device is HD audio render. This will give you sound but no ability to lower and increase volume with buttons. Your master volume will not even work. To correct this is actually rather simple. GO to window updates and windows will find a huge amount of updates and 1 of them will be under hardware for audio. Do all the updates including the hardware updates and everything will work again, buttons to. (This was my only headache after the installation)

    FINISHING UP

Use Superman23 guide to install the software you want and read and do exactly how he says to install the QUICKPLAY 2.0 (The cd you should have burned from the file you got on the internet) If you do exactly as he says you should have full QUICKPLAY 2.0 features. Follow his guide!!!! But, please make sure you followed my highlights in the beginning on preparing the HD before XP install.

If you have both guides and my highlight guide with you before you start and you have the proper CD’s, you should have no issues and have a very fast system now with complete functionality of quick play 2.0 and other neat features.

    Thanks for reading!

    ScottM,
Superman23's guide says to have only 1 partition apart from 1028MB of unpartitioned space for QuickPlay to install. I think his and your notebook has only one hard drive.

In my case, I have 2 hard drives of 100GB each (disc0 and disc1). Here are my partition details:
    Disc0:
    - 1 partition of 94366 MB (for C drive),
    - unpartitioned space of 1028MB

    Disc1:
    - 1 partition of 95394 MB.

I will let you know if QuickPlay setup succeeds with this configuration.

That should not be an issue. Do a full format on disc0 (the 94366 mb) and leave the unpartioned space of 1028 alone (it should say unallocated space?) and I would leave disc1 alone for now. Just destroy the partition on it so you have no drive letter for disc1. DO the format on disc1 in xp after you are done with the install of everything.

My question is how to obtain the windows Media Center OS disks. I tried last night to obtain these from HP for a nominal cost. I has basically told tough s#&t. I only wish to have legal copies of the OS on my machine without obtaining a retail license.

    Scott,

When I tried do re-install.. the 1028 Mb was showing up as logical paritition of 1028 MB along with my huge 95334 MB partition1.

So, I've to delete the partition to make it 1028MB -"Unallocated Space"!!

Also, I had created 3 partitions out of my primary 95334 MB...
installed XP one big primary one.. ..drivers & all were good.

But, quickplay didn't go through.. any idea why..??

    Please..any help is much appreciated!!
