This has been going on for a while now and seems to be getting worse. My fan seems to be constantly running in a higher state than what when I first got it. I remember when it was very quiet in the hp coolsense quiet mode but now that doesn't do anything. Even when my core temp is around 35-40 it is still being noisy. I know this can't be normal because when i first got it, it was very quiet compared to now. It all seemed to happen after an update a while back but i can't remember what it was. Should I just try to do a clean install of everything? I tried searching but I couldn't find anything very helpful or that recent.

Check processor load and for apps that might be running in the back ground. Possibly something loading the processor making it run a little hotter and the fan is louder trying to cool it a little better.

I've checked and nothing is. My processor isn't running anything and it stays at a low temp of around 40 degrees. Does the GPU have a separate fan to cool it?

    Check HP CoolSense.
Most Probably it is setup to be in "Coolset Mode".

You can change it to "Performance Optimized" mode.

Have you updated your bios recently?
I just purchased a dv6 and when I was poking around the bios settings, under the "System Configuration Tab" I noticed that the Fan Always On setting was enabled. If you updated your bios recently maybe that setting was changed to Always On. Just a thought.
