I have been in the market for a while now for a desktop replacement laptop. I've never had a laptop so I have no personal experience to fall back on. I narrowed it down to 3 but in the end, I think I am going to go with a HP. The 2 losers are the Dell XPS 17 (no DDR5 GPU) and the Asus G73SW-XT1 (too pricey for not much more over the HP).

After building my own online and then calling their sales center, this is what I came up with:

    HP dv7tqe (1600x900 res.)
    i7-2630qm 2.0GHz with turbo boost to 2.9GHz
    6g DDR3 1333 MHz RAM
    Radeon HD 6770m 1g DDR5 GPU
    Blu-ray
    Beats audio
No backlit keyboard (sigh...no option for it)
Advanced 3 year warranty that covers accidental damage, spills, etc.
The usual bells and whistles for this package

    Delivered for $1,100

I hope this was a good choice. It will be used for playing Rift, internet, email, word, excel, some work programs, and music creation on Finale 2011. I have not ordered it yet; still waiting on my tax return. Any last minute suggestions, comments, etc?

    Edit: fixed a type-o...supposed to be 2630qm.

For that price, it sounds like you used a coupon code.

If you didn't use a coupon code, there is one out there for 30% off. Let me know if you need a link

Hope you don't need it anytime soon. I ordered a DV7 03/21. It's 04/22 today. It hasn't even shipped yet.

I would for sure downgrade to the 2630qm. The price increase is definitely not worth it for the small gain in performance; besides, I don't think you would even use the 2630qm to its limit. (You wrote 2.0-2.9GHz, which is not the spec of the 2620qm, but rather that of the 2630qm; which one is incorrect?) Everything else looks fine. If you don't want to get your dv over a month from now (though you get 10% off for each delay), you should settle for the quick-ship and demand that an HP CSR lowers the price to one of a custom built equipped with the 30% off code.
