Hey guys, so I just got my brand new HP DV6 Quad edition 2011 yesterday from Fedex.

When I'm using it for casual stuff like youtube, browsing, webcamming, it's fine.

The temp stays around 50C for all 4 cores.

When I start up Left 4 dead 2, or Battlefield Bad Company 2, the temp kicks up to 90-95C.

And the upper left and bottom left gets hot. Also, the fan kicks up like crazy.

Is this normal and is this safe???

Is there another type of program I can use to measure temps?

Help pleasee I'm worried :( thanks!

Repaste or turn off turboboost during gaming. GPU is more likely to be the bottleneck in most games.

Then it's not normal. You should not hit more than 85 degrees if your CPU is not turboing past 2GHz.

It gets hot when you play games. If it's consistently running at 95C, that might be cause for alarm. CPUs and GPUs are built to withstand a lot of heat, though.

Not really normal although the DV6 does get hot. I would go as far to say that the left palmrest gets too hot and burns a little.

Turn coolsense on max fan settings and disable turbo boost while gaming.

i didnt even know you could turn off/on turbo boost

    how would you do that?

and in my opinion, DON'T repaste anything if you literally just got it. call them and send it back to be repaired or exchanged for free

50 C while idilng is pretty much what I've got. ~75-80 C for gaming is what I remember seeing on my i5 build. Nonexistant airconditioning unfortunately. (remember guys most of the USA is melting under 90-110 F days for a while now)

Right now in a pretty freezing air-conditioned office my CPU is idling at 43 C.

If this isn't "normal" then I guess that's yet another reason to RMA this machine, or maybe outright return it and reorder. (but I don't want to re-do my hard drive)

I get around 50-60 C when I'm just youtubing, browsing internet, etc.

This is for my cpu only btw.

Idk how to get temperatures off for my gpu.

Is there a simple program that just shows every temperature??

CPUID Hardware Monitor seems to be good for me.

GPU-Z for checking if your Raedon card is working, but once you set your games to "performance" it will be an obvious difference in frame rate.

I also get around 90c when gaming so I splurged and got a cooler for my desk.

Amazon.com: Cooler Master Storm SF 19 17" Laptop Cooler with USB 2.0 (SGA-4000-KKNF1): Electronics

I haven't recieved it yet but the reviews were good, but for the DV6 it might not work out so well considering that the fans suck out heat rather than blow air upward. This is my first real notebook and I'm pretty much a noob.

Yep. Just received my dual core today and it hit 95 degrees C in 15 minutes of BC2. It seems that HP is really inconsistent with their pasting or something, because my friend's i7 barely gets into the 80s while gaming.

if you just bought it, i suggest returning it and get another one. And you should also turn it off every once in a while. Leaving it on constantly for hours on power mode will have its effects in the long run.

My old computer ran out of warranty(exactly 1 year old) and is overheating like crazy, averages 90 degrees Celsius and constantly shuts down by itself. HP told me that they would repair it for free.

Alright, so on the coolest setting in Coolsense my DV6 still reaches the low 90s for CPU during BC2 (1080p dx11 high/med 2x aa, runs 20-30fps, btw). GPU temps are fine, low 80s.

What's bothering me is that while HWmonitor seems to report high temperatures, my laptop still feels pretty cool. The left palmrest barely gets warm and the air coming out of the vents is hot, but not too hot. I'm guessing that the CPU isn't making proper contact with the heatsink so none of the heat gets dissipated.

    Anybody else experiencing this?

You sure this isn't degrees Farenheit? I don't think I've gotten past 80 degrees C playing Crysis on high settings on my dv6.

What kind of table you put your laptop on?

That could be. If you're adventuresome, repaste it. Has anyone repasted and posted about their experience yet? Is it something you could do and not be noticed should it require warranty work? I just never trust the paste job factories do, I always get significantly improved temperatures when I do it myself.

I have the left palmrest becoming burning hot problem too. After 10-15 mins of gaming, its unusable with a bare palm, I'd say.

    What games were you playing?

My computer has at a pretty low temp when I'm just browsing the internet (40-50c, ambient temp 27c). I just played Just Cause 2 for a bit and the highest temp was only 85c. I guess BC2 just stresses the processor a lot more...

48C with Hulu is good actually since it's flash based and quite resource intensive.

Yea thanks guys. To kinda experiment i changed coolsense from performance to coolest, and it says my temperature is at 44 after a good hour of hulu watching. I also had my desk fan on, if that makes any differrence too.

Although when i turned off my desk fan, i did notice the computer fan was pretty audible, but i suppose thats fine as long as it keeps it cool. Guess coolsense is actually pretty cool.

Also its 96 degrees F where I am right now. So it is pretty hot and humid right now.

Really, anything under 60C is nothing to worry about. Well you should idle below 45C, but any type of load under 60C is fine. Peak load it shouldn't exceed 85C.

On my 2720qm, during 3dmark vantage my temps go up to 94C using CPUID Hardware Monitor.

    Core 0 max is 92C, Core 1 94C, Core 2 94C, Core 3 87C, Package is 94C.

It's too late to return it though. Guess I'll just have to see if this becomes an issue.

you can always repaste the CPU and GPU. Not sure how much of a feat that would be though in these laptops.

50C for a CPU or GPU is downright icy.

While playing Starcraft 2 on high at 1368x768 resolution, mine doesn't heat up at all. It stays very cool, but there's audible fan noise.
    I'm pretty satisfied

Is this with Turbo mode on or off?
I don't know if I should be worried but all i'm doing on this computer right now is Internet Browsing and MSN, and my i7's temps are as follows:

    52 degrees
    54 degrees
    55 degrees
    62 degrees

I just recently changed my coolsense to coolest...I believe this turns off turbo boost?

That seems pretty normal. The real test is to see how hot it gets under load.
