No more than two days after I've received it.

It's reset itself a couple times completely randomly. I was using it last night to write a paper and now I turn it on this morning and it won't start up.

    Windows Boot Manager

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change meight be the cause. To fix the problem:

    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, then click Next.
    3. Click Repair Your Computer.

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    File: \boot\BCD

    Status: 0xc000000f

Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I entered startup menu and ran the three system diagnostic tests it provides for RAM, run-test, and hard disk test. All had no problems.

I'd REALLY rather not do a system restore. But if I have to, I believe I can. It came with that weird restore from the hard drive D:\ option so I didn't create a disk. I created a system restore point yesterday, too.

What's going on / what should I do?

sounds like your master boot record got messed up.

if you can boot into safe mode, download easybcd to reset and override the mbr.

if you can't boot at all, you may need to search for a different program to download on a flash drive (boot from flash drive) that will reset the mbr

if you have access to any same os disk, you should be able to boot from that and fix the mbr from the recovery console

How do I run easybcd to boot it from my USB drive as you said? I can't figure it out for the life of me and I'm afraid I'm going to mess up my roommate's Vista computer if I do something wrong.

When you turn off your computer, do you hold down the power button or click start and hit shut down?

I was having that issue too. It stopped on its own. I couldn't download some of the drivers actually.

I've posted what's happening with my dv5t in the dv5t thread.. makes no sense. Maybe I should do full system recovery to factory settings? (not system restore, but the one that gets rid of all your files)

Please, please, before you do anything else!! If you can get your notebook to boot "MAKE THE DVD PROGRAM RESTORE DISKS"!!!. You will be very glad you did.

Don't count on F11 and the restore partition to restore your computer to factory settings. If you foul up the MBR you most likely will not be able to access the restore partition to do the factory restore. You will then need to order a set of restore disks from HP.
