Hmm... the Sony has a better GPU, likely somewhat better battery life, maybe a pound lighter. The HP has a much better CPU overall (performance, Enhanced Virus Protection, 64-bit capability) and more configuration options (Bluetooth, high-res screens, etc). I get 3-4 hours of battery life out of my zv5000z (12 cell battery), the big 15.4" screen has a bigger impact than the CPU on battery usage unless your CPU load is high.

Between the two, I'd go for the HP.

Get the zv5000z and the 1029x1200 WUXGA screen. It may not be Briteview, but before the recent "cold snap" here (down in the 50s F <g>) I used to read newsgroups and program database forms out under the big black cherry tree in the back yard. It does require a little protection from direct sky overhead, but my old 1280x1024 Dell I couldn't even use on the roofed over part of the deck for the terrible glare. This screen is BRIGHT and extremely sharp. I hear HP has some 5400 rpm drives available, at I don' know what premium - I recommend getting the smallest, cheapest they'll sell you and puting in a Hitachi 7K60 - bunches of us have done it, it's easy, and something like a Vantec NexStar USB2 enclosure will let you use the old slow drive as a 30Gb sneaker net disk!

One more thing...zv5000z fan noise sometimes annoying, since HP uses desktop CPU, so that's another + to emachines with Mobile AMD 64

    zv5000z AMD 64 3000+ 1.8 Ghz 768 DDR SDRAM 15.4" WXGA (1280x800) 30 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go

I agree, HP zv5000z is better deal then Sony, except for the GPU. If you have money for Sony and want better GPU then zv5000z, you might consider zx5000, only HP doesn't give the price on hpshopping.com. Does anyone know anything about new zx5000 prise? But if you choose AMD 64 and want better GPU, then check out e-machines.

Hmm.... I am not saying that its too loud, but one fan is always on on zv5000z that's what annoys me. For example on ze4XXX with Mobile Athlon, fan is off from time to time.

I am new to forum and HP laptops for that matter. I am ordering an HP dv5000. Work is paying for it this time [ :D]. Always loved AMD processors on my desktops.

Except for the eMachines 5305 I am writing this on now that is burning my lap....ouch[V]. Has had an overheating problem since I bought it. Dont know if the 68XX series laptops are better as I was considering that instead for a while. I expect the HP is a better choice for my uses anyway.

Currently using eMachines 5305 laptop / space heater.
Will be getting HP dv5000 (AMD 64) 2.8 GHz w/1 gig mem, 15.4" brightview screen, vid mem 64 mB, win XP Pro
