    Hello.

My notebook suddenly shut off yesterday and doesn't start again. The lights turn on when I plug, but then go out after a second.

There were several things going on before the laptop shut off.

    1. The fan was working profusely, although it was cool and had not any obstructions.

    2. The battery indicator said: "plugged in, not charging".

    3. I just finished installing Vista SP1 through Windows Update.

    Please try the following:

    1) Take out the battery pack and unplug the AC power

    2) Hold the power button for 30 seconds or more

    3) ONLY plug in the AC power this time and try starting up again

If what flipfire posted doesn't work, then the internal power supply on the laptop broke. I had the same exact problem with my old dv6000z, and I had to send it in for repair.

Its a common practice for booting issues. It just clears the cmos settings and all that other stuff...

It definately solves the infamous 'battery bug'

It also flushes the system of electrical currents. Sometimes electrical currents can screw up the power supply or other components inside the laptop, and cause the laptop not to boot for example, and this method will flush out those currents and sometimes fix the problem with the laptop.

Negative. I tried your advice, but the notebook doesn't start. It lights up, but then shuts off.

I'll take my laptop to the service on Monday. Hopefully, my laptop will work after that.

the steps that flipfire suggests also shows if its the battery giving problems, sadly from what you said thats not the case

more than likely the mobo has fried somewheres in there...hope you have a warrenty :S

Call the maker, get to there support, and ask what the part is (if you dont have warrenty) theres 2 things that can happen: Its a piece that screws/slides into a socket, or its soldered in, if its solderd, its not going to be cheap.
