    Hi,

Just for your reference, I am posting the steps that I have used to successfully set up my new drive for my lappy. I documented every steps I made so that I can reuse it somewhere down the road in case something happen to my machine. I recommend you do the same thing. The steps I used are by no means the official ways, you can use it if you like. When I install things, I intend to make sure I know what they are cuz I don't want the bloat load of software re-installed.

Kudos to the following threads, these 2 installation guides are good. I admitted I didn't go through all of them, but I tried to consolidate what works best and are the easiest:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=59471
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=62357

    My Spec:
    ----------
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7200 (2.00 GHz)
    - 14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    - 128MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7200
    - HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone + Webcam
    - 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (2x256MB) (still looking for deal to get this upgrade to 2GB)
    - 60 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive (Replaced with Hitachi Travelstar 80GB 7200RPM Drive from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145005)
    - 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
    - Extra 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

    My Steps:
    ----------
    1. Run PC Recovery Program to backup to 3 DVD Recovery Disks (took me > 1 hr)

    2. Backup the whole C:\SwSetup to a USB External Drive (it's about 3.5gb)

    3. Stop machine. Remove the large plate that has the harddisk logo. Remove the hdd and the bracket to the unit. Make sure you remove the adapter and plug it into your new SATA drive. Reverse the above procedures. ** Make sure you use the right size screwdrivers and don't force the screws, or else you might strip your tiny screwheads :) **

    4. Boot machine and enter the BIOS (hit F10) immediately. Go to the System Configuration page and set "SATA Native Support" to Disable

    5. Boot to the Windows XP CD, and enter Windows setup.

    6. Create your partitions (mine is based on a 80gb drive)
    - out of the 76309MB from the Hitachi 7200rpm 80Gb Drive, create a 75280MB partition (C:\), then a 1028mb partition for QuickPlay (D:\), 8MB remains (8mb is always there, so do your math accordingly)
    - actually, creating a D: partition is probably unnecessary since I will need to delete the partition in step 23

    7. Choose C: to install, do format the partition using the NTFS file system. (Full format for the 1st time, it takes awhile)

    8. Continue to install Windows XP Prof

    9. Copy SwSetup folder from External USB drive to local c: drive

    10. Install Intel Chipset Driver (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility 7.2.2.1006). Go to SwSetup\Chipset and run setup.exe. (Ignore the Found New Hardware notices) Reboot.

    11. After reboot, click Start, click "Run" then type "devmgmt.msc" (shortcut to the device manager)
    - Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and right click on "Primary IDE Channel" and choose "Update Driver". If prompted to connect to Windows Update, always say no. Choose "Install from a list or specified location".
    - Choose "Don't search, I will choose the driver"
    - Click "Have Disk", and browse to SwSetup\HDD, and click OK. Choose "Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller", and click "Yes" to any update driver warnings you get.
    - Reboot

    12. Hit F10 to the BIOS, and enable Native SATA Support. Save & exit. After entering Windows, it requests a Reboot. Do so.
    - you should see the following devices under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers:
    - Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
    - Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
    - Primary IDE Channel

    13. Install Video Driver (NVIDIA Windows XP Display Driver) - Goto SwSetup\Video and run Setup.exe
    - should see NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200 in the Display Adapters after reboot

    14. Install Audio Driver (Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio) - Goto SwSetup\1UAA\Disk1 and run setup.exe. Reboot now.
    - after reboot, a Microsoft UAA Function Driver for High Definition Audio - Conexant Waikiki with a Question mark is shown in Sound, Video, and game controllers
    - Run the SwSetup\Audio\Setup.exe to "UPGRADE" Conexant High Definition Audio (this will resolve the above Audio issue

    15. Install Modem Drive (HDAUDION Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP), Goto SwSetup\Modem and run Setup.exe

    16. Instal Network Adapter Driver (Intel Pro Network Adapter), Goto SwSetup\Network\ right click on the e100b325.inf file and run Installl
    - it didn't do anything!!
    - Right click on Ethernet Controller in Other Devices, and do install from SwSetup\Network\, this installs the Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection

    17. Install BlueTooth (HP INtegrated Module with Bluetooth wireless Technology 4.0.1.3500), Goto SwSetup\BTOOTH and run setup.exe

    18. Install Touchpad software (Synaptics Pointing Device Driver Insallation). The setup file is in SwSetup\Touchpad.

    19. Install Wireless Lan (Broadcom 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter) from \SwSetup\WLAN\SETUP.exe
    - Run iProDifX.exe from \SwSetup\WLAN2\ (Intel Pro Wireless Device Installation), this will install the Intel PRo/WIreless 3945ABG Network Connection
    - Run Setup.exe from \SwSetup\WLASST\Disk1 (HP Wireless Assistant)

    20. Install Chipset Drivers (Intel CHipset Software Installation Utility 7.2.2.1006)
    - I don't feel like it has done anything

    21. Install the QuickPlay software (HP QuickPlay 2.3) from SwSetup\QPW. This will also give you the MPEG2 codec you need to play DVDs and use the TV tuner.

    22. Install the QuickLaunch buttons from SwSetup\QLB\Disk1\Setup.exe.
    - After this step, it asks for a reboot
    - This step resolved an Unknown device in the Other Devices

    23. Install Direct Play part of QuickPlay (HP QuickPlay Direct 2.3) from Swsetup\HPQPDP\setup.exe
    - Got the following Error because the 1028mb partition was formatted to d: drive:
    - ComponentMoveData had the following error:
    - Component: QuickPlay COmponent
    File Group:
    File:
    Error Number: -2147418113

    - Fix the above issue by deleting the D: 1028MB partition in the Control Panel->Admin Tools->Comp Mgmt->Disk Mgmt so that it appears to be UNALLOCATED SPACE. Redo step 23
    - After install, it needs to reboot, and during reboot, it automatically install sth that includes Audio driver, QuickPlay & other drivers reinstall (not sure why)

    24. Install Media Card Reader Driver (Ricoh R5C832/843 Flash Media Driver Ver.1.01.10) from \SwSetup\MISC2\setup.exe
    - this requires a reboot after setup
    - this resolves the 3 "Base System Device" question marks
    - Base System Device (Location=PCI bus 3 device 9 function 3)
    - Base System Device (Location=PCI bus 3 device 9 function 2)
    - Base System Device (Location=PCI bus 3 device 9 function 4)

NOTES: Both the microphone and the camera installed themselves with no additional drivers

This is it! You should have all the drivers resolved by now. I have tested my DVD quickplay and it boots directly without going to windows. Good luck to you all!

Excellent guide!! You've done a great job of condensing the reinstallation guides(which are very helpful) into a single, easy to follow post. I reallty do appreciate the time you've taken to document your process. I'll be wiping my HDD this weekend to reinstall XP pro cleanly, and this really saves me from having to slog through the huge reinstall threads. It's also handy that we have identical PCs, except my 80GB HDD is the standard 5400rpm drive.

One question though: it sounds like you reinstalled XP Pro using the recovery DVDs created from the D:\ partition. Is this correct, or did you use a generic OEM CD and the license key from the bottom of the notebook. The reason I ask is I have yet to determine for sure if the recovery DVDs(either the burned ones or the ones you can buy from HP) will allow you to install XP Pro cleanly(without all of their bloatware). Lemme know which way you went. Thanks!

Could someone tell me how to find C:\SwSetup?

I've been wanting to do a clean install, but without that, I can't do it yet.

I feel so stupid having to ask that, but I just can figure it out...

    :\

    Edit:

And if anyone knows, where is the equivalent folder of SwSetup (if it's not SwSetup like on an HP notebook) on an HP desktop?

    Thanks.

    trakslacker,

You're quite welcome. I usually document everything related to hardware & software configurations. It is important because you know you need to refer to it later on. To clarify my installation, I used an OEM Windows XP Prof with SP2 that I slipstreamed for my Desktop PC a year ago. I am glad that I didn't have to slipstream another one just for this laptop because our pioneers have already figured out the disable SATA solution. As for the Recovery DVDs, I seriouslly doubt that I will need to use them because all the drivers and software that I need are already in the swsetup directory.

    Jon-Michael,

Unless you have zapped the swsetup directory, you should be able to find that from your file explorer. This directory isn't hidden or anything. My advise to you is find someone who can assist you with this clean install task if you feel that you don't understand or not confident enough. Otherwise you might wind up with a beautiful piano black door stop!!

Good luck guys, hope I've answered your questions.

Oh wow. I was going through those other re-installation guides for the hp 6000t (the laptop which I currently have) and I know the re-installation guides for the hp6000t and the hp2000t are pretty much exactly the same.

I was going through the forum and found the installation guides for the dv800t and 6000t and trust me. I was glad that I had found that because I definitely wanted to get all of this crap out of this system, but it was SO MANY PAGES to go through! Glad I ran across this, you definitely made it easier on me by consolidating all those notes into one post (I was going to have to go through each one of those threads, 18 pages long and consolidate my self).

Considering this guide can be used for at least like 4 different laptops with few things differing, I think the mods should sticky this. I actually just registered with the site (even though I've been here for longer) just so I could thank you. Good job.

hmmmm just wondering, from the other guides ive read, they always recommended to install the quickplay FIRST before any other drivers because if i recalled correctly, 1) by doing so, you may test right away if it works and if not, then you can re install again from the beginning? and 2) i was under the impression that quickplay needs to be installed first to work properly.....

    correct me if im wrong.

Its not necessary to install it first, but it is recommended since as you stated it decreases the chances of any conflict and if it fails to install you wouldnt have wasted time downloading/installing updates & drivers. I have re-installed QP perfectly fine after installing all the drivers & stuff but it has even failed to install a couple of times under these circumstances as well. So, it does not hurt to install it first
