I installed a new Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 hard drive in my zv5000 but when I tried to partition and format the hard drive, it said that there was no hard drive detected. Isn't the notebook supposed to autodetect the new drive? I couldn't find any settings in BIOS about setting up a new drive. I'm fairly positive that I did the physical installation of the drive correctly (not very difficult).

How can I fix this situation? Thanks in advance.

Did you remove the HDD bracket from the old drive and use it in the new one. Almost all HP laptops use this adaptor. Without this the HDD wont be connected anf therefore the system will not recognise the new HDD.

For some laptops, you need to set HDD as CABLE select(if it is available) and for some laptops it needs to be MASTER.

I guess you already checked the HDD with another system.

I haven't checked the hard drive with another computer (I doubt there's anything wrong with the drive itself). The drive was shipped to me with the default Master setting and it didn't come with a jumper for me to even try to set it as Cable Select. Is there a step that I'm forgetting to take? Is there something different about this second generation 7200rpm drive from the first generation 7K60? I'm obviously a newbie at this and I'm at a loss.

If your notebook works ok with the old hdd, and you're certain that the jumper settings in the new hdd are correct(master/cable select), I believe that your new hdd is dead.

Usually, the hdd is detected right away... the only problem that may arise for older notebooks is bios support for larger hdds. I believe your notebook should be ok.

    Hey mcbain,
I just installed a 60 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 in my pavilion zx5078cl last weekend. I think the only thing you are missing on your new drive is a correctly installed jumper. The drive I removed from my notebook was set to CABLE SELECT, so I set the new 7K100 to the exact same setting and had no problem with the BIOS recognizing the drive. If the new drive was purchased OEM (mine was OEM from Newegg), it did not come with a jumper installed. You need to correctly jumper the drive before your laptop will detect it. Setting the jumper to CABLE SELECT mode may be the solution.

UPDATE: I just turned off my pavilion zx5078cl, removed the hard drive, and removed the jumper. I am thus running this drive in MASTER mode. It is working properly as I type this message.
