I was at my local Fry's today hoping to get a look at the HDX18-1020US that they're showing on their website. They didn't have it in stock, but the person I spoke to did pull up something rather interesting. This is directly off their screen in-store:

    PLU: 5713002
ITEM: HP HDX 914 Intel C2Q9550
    DESCRIPTION: CQ2 9550 / 8GB / 750GB
    BD DVD+/-RW RAM / VP
    802.11n / 2X 9800GT 512MB
    PRICE: $1,999.99

Strikes me as odd but the Q9550 is a desktop cpu, yet HP doesn't sell desktops under the HDX label. The component description seems to indicate a desktop, and not a laptop.

Nobody there knew anything about this laptop, it wasn't in stock, so the best I got was a call-back when it arrives. The manager there said that if it is already showing in their system it should be in the stores within 2 weeks.

Is it possible that HP has a quad-core SLI notebook for $2000??? Or did the people at Fry's take me for a ride?

My guess is that it's a Blackbird variant.

It has to be a desktop as it states not only a Desktop Processor but you cannot have a single 750gb hard drive like stated and 2X9800GT hence its not 2X9800 M GT

Mistake. A motherboard capable of using desktop CPUs (let alone 9800Ms) needs to be redesigned. And the HdX couldnt possibly fit that, it would melt, see the sager np9262 (6kg, 2.3in) to see how bug a laptop has to be to contain such power.

    Look, 8GB RAM = $1300. Q9550 = $500 750Gb (notebook) HDD = $350.
Thats already over $2000. HP would be making a huge loss.

Also, unless HP have 500GB +250GB, i dont think they would offer 750GB. Its either 640Gb or 800GB. Desktop IMO.

8gb of ram for $1300? the egg has 8gb sodimm for 300. you cant really compare retail to wholesale prices. i wager hp paid 1000-1500 max for the parts, then marking up 500.

    [Edited in kind] :)

They have been since Santa Rosa. And it's been done by a few owners of HP and Dell notebooks on here ever since 4GB Sodimms have been sold.

Will those work in laptops with DDR3 RAM slots?

***? $300??? It cost $700 for a single 4GB stick. And that was before the huge drop of the Aud.

It is a desktop. HP is launching HDX-branded desktops.
