I've been looking at laptops for about a month now and I plan to purchse in the next few weeks. I am going to law school, so portability is important, as is battery life. I think I've narrowed my choices to the HP Business line, probably a NC6230 or NC8230. None of the regular consumer line laptops from any company really fit my needs. Both of these are out of my original budget, but I'll pay for what I want. Anybody see any major advantages of one over the other?

    Thanks

    They are both great laptops.

I've used them side by side, and the biggest difference is obviously the screen size. The NC6230 has a two button trackpad/trackpoint, while the NC8230 has three buttons. I believe that the 6230 lacks a firewire port as well. Other than that, the units are very similar.

I can imagine that the 6230 makes for a slightly better traveler, as it is a bit lighter, and doesn't take up as much real estate.

The biggest factor for me in deciding to go with the NC8230 was the initial poor reviews of the NC6230 for battery life. According to some sites, the NC6230 gives out after 2.5 hours. Unfortunately, I have not had time to test the battery life side by side, but will let you know if I get the opportunity.

    Overall I'd recommend the NC8230 -- I certainly don't regret my decision...

FYI: I was able to compare the battery side by side using battery eater pro.

    NC6230: 2 hours and 25 minutes
    NC8230: 3 hours and 32 minutes

    Definitely go for the NC8230!
