I'm just about talked into ordering the NC8430. I've read about the fan issues and I think I could be okay with it but I do wonder, how loud is the fan? I mean, running a lot of the time is okay if it doesn't sound like a small plane trying to take off in my living room (like my current Sony K17).

    Thanks.

this is my first notebook and i can't really give an informed opinion as i'm not really bothered by fan noise anyway. when i got this notebook and started burning the recovery discs, i left the room, when i got back, i thought i had left my desktop fan on!

IMO, with an x1600 graphics card, this is likely to be one of the louder fans, what are you going to be using the notebook for?

This is something that has me a little worried. If I buy an NC8430, it will be to use in class the majority of time. Noise is a big concern for me.

For use in class, the fan noise would be completely drowned out, but that depends on how loud your classmates are.
If you've got sensitive hearing then you can definitely notice it in quiet conditions. Tbh, I was expecting it to be quieter under regular usage (surfing, typing, movies etc) but its probably due to the x1600 as the1 mentioned

Thanks for the info the1. I'm using it for writing primarily (and web stuff). A noisy fan when I'm sitting in my quiet office tends to disrupt my creative concentration. I have a feeling I'm just going to have to order it and try it to see if I am okay with it or not.

I've got one (NW8440), basically the same except the video card.
It isn't warm or noisy at all when used on batteries.
I've set my gpu to slowest when used without AC, so it's pretty cool&quiet.

Anyone here underclock the the GPU/CPU? Does it keep the fan from spinning as fast/often on the NC8430?

    Of course it does.
My cpu is 1ghz when idle, and gpu is at min on battery.

Well hearing that puts my mind a little more at ease. I don't really care if it's "loud" when I am home playing games. During class it's a different story though; I would want it pretty quiet, well atleast not as loud as the guy with that old p4 Alienware monster. I think my air conditioner makes less noise.

Okay...thanks for the votes of confidence on the volume of the fan. Time to pick all my options, order, and let the waiting commence.
