I searched around and found that someone had upgraded their NC8430 to a T7600 CPU. Is this the best/fastest upgrade for this notebook or are there more current Intel CPUs that will work? I've been happy with the notebook so far and don't think I need a new one until I move to Vista (or Windows 7) so it may be a couple years until I get a new on.

Thanks in advance for the info!!!

The T7600 will probably be your fastest option. Newer intel CPUs probably won't work with the nc8430; after all, the T7600 was the fastest CPU that was offered in the nc8430 AFAIK.

Yeah, I'm very interested in upgrading the CPU of my nc8430 as well. I currently have T2500 @2Ghz and I'd like it to be faster.

But my main question is, how difficult is this? I've been building desktops for ten years but never messed around with the internals of a laptop more than memory and harddrive.

What is the process, and how difficult is it? Just pop it open, remove old cpu, install new cpu with thermal paste?

    Thanks!

I had an nc8430 before selling it off a few months ago. I did upgrade the processor to a T7500 or T7600 (cannot remember exactly). It was as simple as flashing the BIOS to the most current version and then swapping out the processor.

Worked just fine, and the fan never really spun up any faster than before. I posted a thread on this back a year or two ago about the swap.

Thanks. What CPU did you go from? Did you experience any performance increase (significant)?

When I bought the machine two years ago I upgraded to 2GB of mushkin PC4200 RAM. Later I upgraded the HDD to a 160GB 7200rpm drive.

Now I need more memory in my system, 2GB doesn't cut it anymore (I work as a developer). So I was thinking about upgrading to 4GB. But all the 4GB kits use PC5300 or PC6400, so I thought that if I upgrade my CPU, I'll be able to take advantage of the higher bus speeds, and I can also install 64bit OS to take advantage of all 4 gigabytes of memory.
Is it true that I need a new CPU to take advantage of the bus speeds?

Oh and kinda off topic, but I just realized my harddrive is 5400rpm, not 7200. How will an upgrade to 7200 affect performance? And how will it affect battery times?

    Thanks!

Well, I remember upgrading the memory from 2GB PC5300 to 2GB PC6400, the 80GB 5400RPM HDD to a 100GB 7200RPM HDD and the processor all at once. It was my business laptop that I had for about a year before upgrading. Needed more power.

The laptop still runs great, but since it was "out-dated" by the company that I was working for when I left, they gave it to me outright. Kind of a parting gift.

Performance was noticeable during certain application use. I was using XP Pro and boot time was a little faster. Heavy resource applications like PhotoShop (I do some web design) were considerably faster, whereas hardly noticeable with email and Internet.

I refurbed a NC8430 and was wondering about this unit's CPU upgrade options. I took out my old T5550 from my Toshiba, I am guessing this will work fine with the NC8430 given that the bios/motherboard supports it.
