I recently bought, last thursday, a HP NC8430. It worked fine till today when I was playing Lineage II for about 2 hours. It then crashed so I held the power button for 5 secs and left it at that to cool down. Assumed it was heat. Came back in the evening it now doesn't boot up and the caps lock light is flashin. I keep basing the caps lock key but it doesn't seem to make a difference. The power LED is on but thats about it and the fan runs.
Any suggestions?

Hmm now it boots up but quickly flashes a windows blue screen and crashes down :S
-
now its gone back to flashing the caps lock button
me thinks my hard drive has failed -
leave it alone and make sure it has time to cool down. what the laptop really hot when it crashed? if so, you might want to get something like the Targus coolpad.
if there was a lot of heat and the laptop isn't booting right now, you might have fried a component? did you OC the X1600? -
ok, if it was the hard drive it would probably have been making some clicking or "unnatural" sounds...did you hear anything? plus, was the HDD area really hot?
i have the nc8430 and i'm fairly certain that my HDD never went above 40C -
Haven't OCed anything.
I've left it for a whole afternoon (about 5 hours) and now it just won't boot. -
the power LED is on as in the fan but the Caps Lock LED keeps flashing and the Caps Lock key doesn't respond
-
if you call HP Business Support (they are actually fairly useful), they can tell you what that Caps Lock flashing really means. i'm sure the BIOS detected a failed part in the notebook (or too much heat).
BTW, i'm fairly certain the HP Small Business phone line is 1-800-888-9909 -
i'm positive that flashing LED is a code from the BIOS...the laptop probably isn't POSTing either.

I am in the UK I think I have to wait till Monday, which sucks because I am going to Uni on Tuesday :S
-
i thought HP SMB tech support is 24x7? if it isn't i'm sorry, but it definitely sounds like a hardware problem to me
-
that 800# was for the US...my bad
i don't know the UK number -
ARGH this sucks, oh well since it was only bought on Thursday I am well within my rights to return it and its also within the warranty
-
that's good news...i will say though that this is a really nice notebook...probably the best 15.4" i've seen. i hope this gets fixed for you quickly.
what is your hard drive?...well who makes it? -
btw on the carepack i have it says that its valid for the nx8200, nx9020, nx9040, nc6110, nc6120 series; nx7400; nx6325
Does that cover mine? -
probably...sounds like they might not have included all the models. bottom line is that HP sells this notebook with a three year warranty as standard, so you should be covered regardless.
-
Ok thanks a lot
hmm I didn't buy it from HP bought it from laptopsdirect.com, but it says it has a one year warranty on the bottom so it should be ok. -
if you go to the nc8430 review thread in these forums there were A LOT of people who ordered from that website that actually recieved the WRONG warranty care pack. laptopsdirect finally owned up to the problem and resolved most (if not all) of those cases.
if that care pack is the wrong one, you'll just need to call them back and fix the issue. -
A lot of phoning me thinks on Monday ...
