Would anyone be so kind to post a very simple, step-by-step HOWTO about getting lower temps and fan noise on the nc8430?

For instance, mentioning things like: which software to download (and which version), which additional files to include, which settings in which panel, etc.

That would be greatly appreciated! :)

I am looking forward to this, too. I don't have the time to wade through 2 forums to piece together all the information.

I have installed NHC Pro version and paid for the licence. Can you tell me where I get "....the proper ACPI profile ...." from and how I install it ? There is, as yet, no user guide for NHC and I'm totally confused by all the acronyms. Is there a simple recipe in layman's language to tell me how to get NHC to quieten my HP nc8430 ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    pacman,

Download the zip file "ACPI-hp-xxxx.zip" which is posted on this forum:
http://p35-forum.de/board/thread.php?postid=47273. Or just google the file name and you'll find it.

The zip file contains 2 files "Hewlett_Packard.cs" and "Hewlett_Packard.xml".
Extract those files into this directory:
    C:\Program Files\Notebook Hardware Control\acpi
(I assume you installed into the default directory.)

Then run Notebook Hardware Control. I have the free version so I'm not sure if your version is the same, but in my version you have to go to the "ACPI" tab and check "Enable ACPI control system"

To control fan speed, click on "Show ACPI Control System Details" and you can adjust the fan speed percentages downward. I have the lowest setting on 20% and my notebook runs fairly cool.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When I upgraded my notebook's BIOS from version F.0D to version F.0E, the acpi control of Notebook Hardware Control stopped working. I had to downgrade from F.0E back to F.0D. (You can check the BIOS of your machine by pressing the information button located to the right of the power button.)

If you were to turn off NHC after a while, would the fan settings go back to normal? I don't want to accidentally destroy the default settings stored in the nc8430, but this might be worth looking at. I actually want to turn the fans up though, since I don't hear too much noise and I rather have it a little cooler.

    Hi,

I got my NC 8430 (RB554UT) about a month ago.

I now finally have the time to undervolt it. I'm trying to use NHC (and i have the F.0E BIOS revision).

Is anyone able to get NHC to dial in voltages lower than 0.95v?

    Jeff

Yes, if you just exit NHC, the fan then starts normally. NHC doesn't change anything in the BIOS or in the configuration that is definitive. It only change controls while running.

    WARNING:

Do NOT turn off "Always have Fan on when on AC Power" in the Bios.

    Why?

Because if you run chkdsk running before Windows, the laptop will overheat and then crash. Not good when that can currupt your hard drive will it?
