hey guys the hp dv 2000 and 6000 series with the imprint finish has been around for a while.
any idea when the new series with a different design would be out?
its been almost a year since we've seen the same imprint finish on the laptops.
im thinking of getting either the dv6500 or the tx1000. but if something new comes to replace the dv6500 i might as well wait?

Not really, because the x5xx series just recently came out with Santa Rosa, and there won't be any reason to change the series until early next year with Penryn. So at the earliest it would be 2008, and that would be most likely a refresh, not a completely new series.

So don't hold your breath anytime soon.

The dv6500, dv2500 & the dv9500 have only been around for a couple of months. The Compaq V6000, V3000 and the AMD versions might get a refresh with new chipset/graphics card options(they are already on sale outside the US) but the Santa Rosa based notebooks wont likely get any updates until Intel releases the Penryn processors late this year or early next year.

Penryn is just a minor update to the current Core 2 Duo's(Merom). Basically Intel moves them to a 45nm manufacturing process, more cache, higher clock speeds and a few tweaks to the architecture. Penryn will still be using the Santa Rosa platform & the platform should get a refresh sometime during the 2nd half of 2008.

    ok thanks.
but this is what i feel about the hp marketing.

the dv5000/8000 series lived for about a year right? before being replaced by the 6000 series.
the 6000 series has been around for a year. and the 6500 update is only hardware wise and not a complete refresh.
with the buying season approaching soon (i.e christmas) is there any chance for a new line up?
and also- they came up with a white special edition, maybe hinting that the 6000 series would die soon?

sorry if this is all rubbish, im new to the world of laptops in detail. but this was just a thought.
i dont wannna invest on the laptop, when something better comes down the line in a month or 2....
and also, i cant wait for techonology, cuz it moves in such a fast pace lol

The thing about it is that there is constantly new stuff coming out that is better and better. I bought an HP desktop in February that I thought was a great deal and it's already no longer offered and isntead systems that are much better are on sale. If you're constantly waiting for the next big technology boost then you'll end up never buying it. So if it's somethign that you need then the best thing to do is go ahead and swallow it and take the plunge. I'd rather have a slightly outdated notebook then no notebook at all and even so I wouldn't want to buy a new notebook every six months to a year (If I had that kind of money) as it would be too much trouble to constantly move my data

What Algus mentioned is definately true. Not worth waiting for the next update since there would never be an end to it. The dv6500 and current generation would probably stay on until Penryn. Updates if any would most likely be minor.

BTW, the special editions are nothing new. There were dv6000z series special editions but they were only sold in limited numbers.

Besides, the new Penryn CPU's will replace the current CPU's just like 667 MHz Meroms replaced Yonah, they will work in the current Santa Rosa machines but they may need a BIOS update. So don't expect new laptops to show up with the first Penryns, that will probably not happen until a new socket and 266 MHz FSB Penryns shows up.

Edit: Yeah pretty much what miner said...

Coincidently, my friend has a SE dv6000z...the case is indeed nice. The coloring matches my HP desktop (which has a silver casing) but I really have a hard time justifying the extra cost just for a different case color.

ok cool. so i guess there is no point waiting for a new hp series.
btw- can someone tell me what the reason was to change from the dv5000 series to the 6000 series? processor upgrade too?

My theory on changing from dv5000 to dv6000 was mainly for style. HP wanted a bigger market share, so they designed a very stylish replacement for dv5000. The first "imprint" model was the dv2000. They released the dv6000 and dv9000 models either as planned replacements for the dv5000 and dv8000 models, or as a response to the success of the dv2000. Whatever the reason, HP definitely succeeded in gaining a larger market share.

I believe it was the Core Duo to Core 2 Duo update. But dont hedge your bets on a processor change bringing on a new series. Take for example the dv1000 series. It went from the Pentium M(Caramel) to the Sonoma and finally the Core Duo(Napa) platforms. So, there are exceptions but generally a new major processor upgrade usually results in a design/series change.

looking for HDX with nVIDIA with full HD resolution. That is what I currently want the most. I have found a solution of the optical drive (I want BD drive), and plan to buy the drive from a store I know.
    When this thing will happen?

ok thanks again for the replies.
    have one last question,
have hp OFFICIALLY announced that the 2500,6500 and 9500 are their main pavilion laptops for 2007?
im getting worried about picking up my 6500. really dont wanna regret it if a new one comes up later this year :(
will i get used to the touchpad? will the design grow into me? ( i LOVED the dv500 series look). battery life good enought? and whats this fan noise im hearing about.

Well, pretty much as official as it can get...
    http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press_kits/2007/holidayproducts/consumerpcs.html

Honestly does it really matter even if they come out with a new version. its going to happen eventually and it shouldnt affect current notebooks in any way. If you want longevity consider the business class notebooks, typically have a longer life cycle compared to consumer class notebooks.
