Hey all...ordered the config shown in my spec! FINALLY!

What do you think? Too much or fine for a gamer & engineer?

Good but not great for gamer (1600 are no match for 1800 or 7800/7900 series), but more than enough for an engineer (although some would argue that the nw series would be more appropriate for an engineer)

I figure the X1600 will be fine for engineering, given I don't do a lot of graphics work...I just need the card to take "study breaks."

BTW, I called in and was able to get a better deal. The rep configured my notebook as one of the pre-configured notebooks with an additional chip of RAM that I would install upon arrival. Between that AND the free upgrade to next day priority shipping, I will probably have this notebook by mid next week.

See my sig for an updated configuration!

The X1600 is plenty powerful for engineering(CAD programs and also SolidWorks). I use this GPU everyday at work and soon school for these programs and it renders and models perfectely. You could have saved some money by not getting RAM from HP, and opted to get the RAM from newegg.com, but if you have the money why bother?

well, they gave me a major discount for going that way with the preconfigured model (i called a rep to get it) and installing one of the DIMMs myself.

plus this way it is all still covered under the warranty, so i'm happier with that

What is the deal? You bought a core 2 duo...so what kind of a deal are you getting? Which docking station did you purchase? Because the nc8440 has the ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 with openGL it is more conducive to CAD type of stuff as opposed to the x1600 which is probably more for gaming and video. Because I use programs like Premiere 2.0 and After Effects Pro. nc8430 with the x1600 works great for me.

BTW, I have the advanced docking station which works great. All in all, this is an outstanding machine. I am really enjoying its power and i only have the core duo 2500.

the sales rep was a nice guy, and i asked nicely about a possible discount since there isn't a really good site for student discounts on HP business notebooks. he said he would "see what he could do."

i ended up getting an upgraded processor (T7400 from T7200) and a sooner shipping date for less than my original order. i believe the discount was around 12.5% in the end off of the price I would have paid ordering directly from HP website.

i'll be posting a review of this notebook when i get it... :)

Good luck on your purchase and hopefully you will receive it soon so we can have your review.

Which docking station did you purchase?

i just got the basic docking station. i didn't need to extra multibay or two USBs, nor the ExpressCard slot.

seriously...what is it with this slot. almost nothing is made for it...

do a custom to order model (click on 'Customize your PC' here)...the 7200RPM HDDs are still available there.

as far as the pre-configured models go, they took down the model (see my sig, I ordered the 2nd GB of RAM though) that I ordered two days after because of this 7200RPM drive shortage that seems to be going on. in any event, i'm sure it'll come back.

they can configure them, just try the website. if you have an XP disc of your own, you CAN order the customized PC without a copy of Windows and save $75.

BTW, HP had my order on 9/12 and *should* be shipping it tomorrow at the latest.
