old 14's onboard sound was pretty good but the speakers sucked the suck

blunt ripp off... they should get rid of these big screens, a one line display would easily do for serious linux console work... -

lol 1400$ without even a GPU... and not to metion the same current generation CPU
hp, never again -
What a complete letdown... no dedicated graphics, 2 usb ports all for $1,400? Gorilla glass or not, you'd be a complete monkey to buy this. This really reminds me of the first generation envy... gorgeous like hell but only reserved to those who don't have a budget in mind. Would it need to drop by at least 200-300 for it to be a consideration for most buyers.
Well, at least we now know why the radiance screens were not being offered in the earlier HP Envy 14s. It would have been in competition with these babies. -

What was HP thinking? FYI, when I called to cancel my HP Envy 15 order, I told them I planned to buy the Spectre. I have no plans to do that now. Sheesh.
Well at least the new Samsungs look cool. -
No dedicated graphics? D:
-
Yo will be tru ENVY with radiance!
So they have the option to return radiance display to next 3xxx Envy 14 -

So what's the likelihood that we see an ivy bridge version in April?

Spectre seems really underwhelming i was hoping for a similar package as ultrabooks but with a mid range GPU.
-
-
but it has glass!!!!!!!!
-
It wud have been exceptional if it didnt have a castrated i5 and and also came with a GPU.
-
It will be awhile before any ultrabook will be considered an acceptable gaming solution. The lack of space and heat dissipation inherent in these small designs means that current technology will run too hot for the latest in performance. I personally see the ultrabook taking off as the "corporate" or "business" solution and replacing most of the current laptop generations. These machines have everything I could possibly want as a corporate user.
The ultrabooks may get to the point of being able to play simple games at high res or intense games at lower res with acceptable FPS, but I'm sure we'll still hear about the person who can't play Crisis at max settings @ 60fps. /sigh
Then again, technology is changing so fast, who knows what could happen. I'd love to see a new GPU that runs under 40C at max output. -
-
-
Or how the ViDock (eGPU) does it?
Either way I hope the reviews show this item in a positive light compared to the Folio 13:
- Remove 16 screws to get to the hard drive
- Only an mSata drive (Fair enough)
- 4Gb ram MAX!
If they're going for business as well as pleasure then drop the mac way of doing things and let admins change hard drives and max out ram (...because all admins like to run VMs from a thin laptop)
-
I'll be waiting for the ultrabooks to get Ivy Bridge in April. Still waiting to see what Lenovo does with its Thinkpads. I must admit that i am somewhat confused about the market HP is targeting with this notebook. It is a consumer device but its use would seem to be more business oriented and it seems awfully big for an ultrabook. The radiance display may be a selling feature, however. -
Greetings all, has anyone seen this video preview of the spectre HP ENVY 14 Specre hands-on at CES 2012 - YouTube at first it appears to be more of the same until the 1:03 mark where the product label shows the specs for what appears to be a customized version of the hp envy 14 spectre suggested retail $1,049usd, cpu intel core i5, ram size(gb) 640, storage size(gb) 8, graphics card 1gb ddr3 radeon hd 6630 switchable graphics, weight 5.7lbs, height 1.2.. These specs clearly take the spectre out of theultra book category but are interesting none the less.. I would love to hear what you guys think of this.. On a side note the screen looks beautiful and appears to accurately display reds..

The announced 900p screen in the Spectre makes me wonder why HP doesn't add a 900p screen upgrade in the current Envy 14. You know... the one with a GPU.

Well there's always hope and room for improvement with a black Beats Spectre.

Not sure why this wasn't mentioned by any of the tech blogs. At that price point, i would probably bite. -
If this ENVY is using the same IPS screen as 15, wouldn't this laptop have the same RED/ORANGE problem?
-
Or are they the same weight???? But different materials and height and ....
I think there's some mistake in stand on the video. -

The specs at HP Envy 14 Spectre ? Extraordinary Ultrabook say "Starting at under 4 lbs."
-
I took it with a grain of salt myself, as this is the first I've heard of such a configuration.. Worse still, the previewer remained silent throughout the video..
Playing devils advocate though on the hp site it says ”actual weight may vary by configuration” so who knows.. -
-
Here are my thoughts on this newest laptop from HP:
- I question the wisdom of an all-glass lid, "gorilla" glass or not. Definately not something you could ever buy without Accident Insurance
- ULV Processors? Yuck! I've used the Thinkpad X200 series laptops with those processors in them and was unimpressed. I wouldn't even BEGIN to be interested in this laptop if there wasn't the OPTION to get a non-ULV processor...even if it was only an i5 (vs. i7)
- No Optical drive? OK. I can handle that if I get something back in exchange. So...what DO I get in exchange? From my perspective, it's not obvious. I guess the bonus is for HP engineers, since they don't have to do a month of all-nighters to custom-engineer an optical drive to fit in the thin chasis.
- No Dedicated graphics...AT ALL? Another Yuck. I'd be happy even if it was a middling GPU. I'd be elated if it was switchable like my Envy 14 (2nd Gen) is. Alas, all I get is glass.
- "Spectre"? What an AWESOME name for a laptop. Too bad they wasted it on a laptop like this. I guess they chose this name because the performance is nothing more than an apparition, a phantom...That said, I like Dictionary.com's second definition of "Spectre": "a mental image of something unpleasant or menacing." LOL
OR...maybe I could just have my Envy 14 custom detailed with the Spectre name? -

HD3000 - What else can be put inside?
The only saving grace is the Chassis size. 14" screen in 13.3" chassis.
AnandTech - HP Announces ENVY 14 Spectre Ultrabook
Spectre has a 14" screen but HP claims the chassis size to be more common in 13.3" laptops, which matches up if you compare it to e.g. 13" MacBook Pro (12.78" x 8.94" x 0.95"). The use of a bigger screen allows HP to use a higher resolution panel, as 1600x900 is more commonly found in 14" and 15" laptops (although there are 13.3" laptops like Sony Vaio SA and ASUS Zenbook with 1600x900). The stock configuration comes with Core i5-2467M but HP offers configurations with Core i7 ULVs as well (HP didn't list any SKUs, though). -
Completely dissapointed with this Hp. They said that they chose the name Spectre, because it evoked mystery, I guess the mystery is what were they thinking when they made this thing?
-
I love it. Best ultrabook on the market, and the first that's arguably a better total package than a MacBook Air 13. At least a serious, serious competitor. We'll see how the execution is, but it looks promising.
