HP redesigns its Envy laptops, announces the Envy 15, 17 and 17 3D -- Engadget
Interesting new design, it looks even closer to a macbook now.
-
I'm loving the black lid and the sleeker look. Optical drive is now on the left side of the 17....
Im definitely getting the new one. December 7th isnt that far away -
Thanks eafd for the news! Updated the title.
Looks like we've also got an article here - http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=6315&News=HP+ENVY+15+ENVY+17+ENVY+17+3D

Based on the pics from NBR and The Verge this new Envy line is hands down the sexiest laptops in the pipeline. I cannot wait till it's in my hands. My only issue is if there will be 30% coupon when it comes out...
-
For god sake. I just bought a second gen motherboard !
-
-
I am sad now.
and drooling ...
-
+1 for the physical volume control.
+1 for multiple display ports.
+1 for the redesigned speaker locations
Let's hope the wireless issues and the redesigned trackpad solve the issues which plague this generation of Envys -
IPS display on the Envy 15 FTW!

Really nice looking laptops. Is this the end for the Envy 14, though? I won't be as jealous in that case...
15.6" is just too big for me.
-
This is the end of the Envy 14. Sadly.
But the Envy 15 looks awesome!!!
- 1080 IPS screen (17'' doesn't have IPS)
- 6 speakers and 1 subwoofer (hope the quality is good)
- Large and wide vent on the back
- Hopefully AMD 6770 like on the dv6t
- Evenly distributed backlit keyboard
- 79 whr battery (my Envy 14 only has a 59 whr battery)
..... Hopefully Beats audio is actually good.
I wanna buy!! But I won't have the money. -
15.6 isnt that portable,,,,,
any info about the weight ?
update : its weight the same as the envy 14... -
Are blu-ray drives available for both machines? It's also interesting that the 15 can have both an SSD and a spinning HD. Best of both worlds.

I wonder if graphics card will be good. Very tempting to replace my aging 14 Envy
-
I like that they removed that left side vertical row on the 15 keyboard.
Making me regret my Sony SE purchase but it looks like the 1080p 15" is going to be pricey. -
Really nice - but I'd miss the textured lid like I have on my Envy 14. Saying that, my next notebook is likely to be a Macbook Pro, but there is a couple of years left in my current Envy at least!
-
Woohoo! I'm glad Samsung confused the hell out of me with their Chronos series. They made me wait long enough to hear this great news about the new Envy 15!!
Can't wait!

Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
Get a sexy Ivy Bridge Envy 14 refresh with a good screen and a real improvement on the GPU and it's an insta-buy for me next summer. The current Envy 14 is already fairly large for my portability desires, though, so an Envy 15 would have to shrink the bezel significantly to really attract me.
Still, it looks really sexy and it's great to see that HP appears to be developing the Envy line toward it's potential rather than the step back that was the Envy 14 2XXX series (or really, any post-Radiance Envy 14). -
Where does it say the 17" does not have an ips display?
-
Where does it say that the 15" has an IPS display ?
The press release says:
The ENVY 15 and ENVY 17 are available with optional Radiance Full HD Infinity displays(1) – either 15.6-inch or 17.3-inch diagonal, respectively. Radiance displays offer higher resolution, richer color, better brightness and wider viewing angles than traditional notebook displays. The ENVY 17 display boasts 50 percent greater brightness than standard. -

From The Verge:
"The base 17-inch version has the same specs, but starts at $1,250. Lastly, there's the Envy 17 3D, which at $1,599 buys you the same specs as the entry-level 17, but brings along a full HD Radiance 3D, 120Hz display, a pair of active shutter glasses, and a Blu-ray player. How about battery life? HP is promising nine hours with the 15 and 9.5 with the 17." -
wondering if this is gonna have 2 or 4 so-dimm memory slots... only getting potentially interesting if with four ...
-
I need documentation before I believe it, but yeah, it would be really cool if an IPS screen is available.
-
Engadget mentions the 15 having an IPS display but HP doesnt mention it on their materials
can someone confirm this?
also, between the IPS and TN on the 17....is it going to be a HUGE difference? I was planning on getting a 17" laptop for my next purchase but display quality matters to me more than anything. Will blacks be blacker? -
Phooey. Now I wish I'd waited, even if the 15 is about a pound heavier than what I want.
I don't like how much more Mac-ish they look though.
Dying to know which GPU it is. -
I think I just came, as long as it doesn't have the heating issues the original 15 had this is my new baby, hoping for something more powerful like a 6950 but one can dream, I'm hoping it's more powerful than the dv6t for the sheer fact it's an Envy and not a Pavilion. Maybe it has AMD's unannounced 7000 series GPU's, since neither is willing to spill the beans about what's in it. Either way, if it supports the slice battery I will be one happy camper!
-
I must know the GPU. Honestly, between the 15 in and the Samsung Series 7 Chronos it comes down to the difference in GPU, the price of the upgrade to the 1080p radiance (I really don't want 7xx). Once we have both these details I will have to make my decision. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
-
I'm just loving the new design and if there is a significant increase in battery life I will definitely get it.
My only worry is that I'm leaving the country on December 19th and I don't know if HP can build it and have it here by the 18th.... -
I really hope we can opt for a matte display like with the old Envy 15.
-
Man this sucks, I just bought my 17t-2100 3D but could have easily waited a few more months. Blah.
-
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
-
That red line around the keyboard I could do without tho.....
Hope you're within the 21 day period h8isgr8 -
I actually like the original Envy's aesthetics a lot more. This looks like a blockier, less sexy Macbook (with out of place red lining?)
Not a deal breaker for me, but I wish this looked sexier -
Is it worth upgrading to the new envy from the 2xxx series, asthetics aside? The only minor issues I have are with large file wi-fi freezes and the USB 3.0 connection to my external drive likes to drop out during a steam install from a backup stored on it. The wi-fi issue is fixed by using old drivers and I just use a USB 2 connection to work around the usb 3 problem (new drivers or bios haven't seems to solve it). And overall i only use the laptop on trips where I would like the extra horsepower to play a game here and there or watch a bluray. primarily use a desktop i built. If I were to upgrade Id probably sell my current envy on ebay as 2xxx 17 3d envys go for $1100-$1200. Not sure if the effort is worth it or if im just getting caught up in the hype over the new design.
Edit also, if anyone has information regarding selling or trade in (Like anything substantial offered by HP to trade up to a new version) options for just this reason I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. -
My wife has been eyeing a 15" MBP to replace her Lenovo.
Thank god I talked her into waiting for awhile. This new Envy 15 looks like a game changer (esp if the rumored FHD radiance panel is IPS). My (errr...her) order will be in on the 7th.
-
Laptopmag quotes the HP Envy 15 as weighing in at 6.3 lbs.
Thats about one pound too heavy in my books. -
It's actually a pretty good weight for a laptop, feels substantial without feeling too 'cheap' or too 'heavy'. -
Received it 9/28. -
Looks like I might give this Envy a try. I still hate the port layout but a 15" IPS display had me at hello.
-
Hmm might consider changing my W520 if they put one of the upcoming hd7xxx gpus in it when they come (I suppose they should have better thermals and better performance)
-
My hope? That quality control would have improved over the first gen Envy 15's. That HP decided to keep the PSG unit that makes these, hopefully means they also want to improve quality. Especially since it appears they want to snatch away potential Apple Macbook purchasers.
I've had only 1 issue with the many HP notebooks I owned over the years. My TX2500 died early this year after 2 years of life. Heat issues caused by AMD CPU/GPU and lack of proper cooling management. -
I really shouldn't ask though. I have an obsession lately of buying and fixing TX1000/2000/2500's. Spare room is starting to look a mess of parts. -

-
well if any one is getting rid of his envy 14, i7... i'll take it from him np
15 is too big for me -
i wonder if you can replace the new ips screen onto the Envy 1xxx and 11xx series ? That'd be nice
