To prep for the launch and for those of you who have decided to purchase: I'm already developing a dedicated driver thread for these two notebooks. It is preliminary, and is subject to change once more information becomes known about the internal components.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...ivers-hp-envy-15-3xxx-envy-17-3xxx-intel.html
<s>The thread is currently closed; I will open the thread once HP has them available for purchase through their US site.</s>
EDIT: Thread is now open for business! -
Btw, in the first table you have 'Winter 2012'. not sure if this is a typo or I'm just missing something. -
). I tend to see Winter as the first season in an annual cycle.
I think it would be more accurate if I said "Late 2011 / Early 2012" instead. Done. -
Thanks again for the work. -
I see Envy is available for orderin on the USA HP site, but no information in the GPU

15.6-inch diagonal Radiance Full HD Infinity LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
hmm...guess the IPS thing was a bust -
I don't see any mention of the panel type in "Radiance Full HD Infinity LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)"
LED is just the backlighting. Both TN PVA and IPS have such backlighting.
TN are crappy usual pannels
PVA (the e14 radiance is one if wasn't an IPS) is as good if not better than IPS panels especially in response time and black depth (mbpros)
Anyway if they are advertising insane viewing angles its either a PVA or IPS. TNs simply cant have any good viewing angles. -
FYI, 33% coupon is working as of now. Coupon site says it expires today, though of course there may be a new one as of tomorrow. Just ordered an Envy 15 and the discount was substantial after radiance and ssd upgrades. Figure I can cancel or return it if the specs turn out to be disappointing.

Does anyone know if I can order an Envy 15 from France?
Can't seem to find any French site that sells it. -
This page conforms the (default) GPU:
HP Envy Home Notebook PCs - comparison results Home & Home Office - HP
Its HD7670M for Envy 15". -
Or particularly this page: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/au/en/ho/WF25a/321957-321957-3329744-3995710-3995710-5186791.html

Any review?
-
Those pages don't say anything about a radiance display option, makes me worried....
Also HD 7670M VGA means that the graphics wont' be much better than that of the dv6 as Anandtech points out: AnandTech - Introducing AMD?s Radeon 7000M and NVIDIA?s GeForce 600M Mobile GPUs -
Is there any way to confirm that the envy 15 1080p display is ips? I foolishly asked a customer rep only to read "what is ips?"

My friends in the UK:
Is this going to be available in the UK? I am moving there in two weeks and was wondering if you guys have heard or have experience from previous launches. Only the last gen stuff on HP UK site at the moment. -
Why there is no per-release review of this product?
-
-
nbk3573 I think still works today
-

i just tried it and it does....

The 33% coupon code worked for me purchasing the Envy 15, but doesn't seem to work for the Envy 17 (even though it's described as applying to any customized laptop). I haven't tried any of the others. -
Works on all (including 17 3d), except 17 normal. Any downside to getting 3d if you don't care for 3d in the least? As in, can I treat a 3d screen as a normal screen?

Same chips without a die shrink. This is re-badging as bad as I have ever seen from NVidia.
I wonder how much higher the clocks could even be than the existing 6700 chips without 28 nm.
Seems like the Envy 17 with a 7690 is actually going to be SLOWER than the existing version with a 6850m. Jesus this is a complete failure. -

NuB here.
Just tried to configure a 15" but no slot-loading Blu-ray as an option. It was advertised to have this. Anyone know if they just haven't gotten around to adding it as an option? It's available on the 17" models. -
the 15 is up for order and customizable, just so people get an idea I made one with :
radiance is a 150$ extra
8 gigs is an extra aswell as 7200 rpm drive
no other gpu option than quoting hp's website "radeon GPU 1gb"
2 year base warranty
Around 1152$ after coupon NBK3573 -
Just jumped on the 17 3D because of the coupon. Will check it out and return it if it turns out to be a bust. Estimated ship date is 12/23.

One question: at idle, each of the Intel CPU options (i5-2430M, i7-2670QM, i7-2760QM, i7-2860QM) should consume about the same amount of power as the others, right?
That's what this review seems to indicate, in the Power Consumption section. I was thinking about going with the i5-2430M just to limit power consumption and keep the notebook cooler, but if that review is applicable and accurate, it seems like that wouldn't really provide any significant benefit if the laptop is idling most of the time. -
So with this gpu we are looking at about 6670 performance is that the consensus?

guess i'm going for the 17" 3D due to the coupon. $1172 after discount.
although there is the possibility of us getting a coupon for the standard 17" which could drop the price to sub $1000. -
Okay, also, has anybody seen any places having pre-built ready to ship? I feel like my configuration is pretty obvious and I'd like my PC sooner rather than later.
-
About to order, but I had a question about the OS. I want the Ultimate version of Windows, but with Windows 8 coming out next year, is it better to just get the base version of Windows 7 and then upgrade to Windows 8 Ultimate when it comes out? Or do you have to upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Ultimate?
-
From Notebookcheck for a 555m (which is on par with the 6770m in benches): Resident evil 5 ultra: 33 fps @ 1920*1080 on a clevo XMG A501
So id say the 7690 (ddr5) = 6770 = 555m
Thats why I am worried about the 7670 (ddr3) that seems to be in the envy 15, DDR3 versions are usually 30% slower than DDR5 ones. -
-
I don't think Win8 upgrades have been fully addressed, but I'd bet the upgrade will be available. When is different question.

So is the same graphics chip being used in the 15 AND the 17 3D? If so that sounds pretty weak. I don't remember if that was the case in the last generation.
EDIT: Re Windows 8 upgrade doesn't MS usually say that if you get a computer within the 3-6 months of the new OS that you get a FREE upgrade?
Otherwise you'll have to pay for that upgrade. How much I don't know but usually theres some window frame of when you buy a PC with the older system that you're allowed to upgrade without hassle to the new one. -
The 7600m series is based of the same 480 SP core as the 6700m series. So if this holds true, the reported 7670m and 7690m in the 15 and 17, respectively, will be the same chip with different clocks.
This may be an upgrade over the old Envy 15, which didn't really get refreshed that recently. But the Envy 17 SB came equipped with a 6850m with 800 SPs, SUBSTANTIALLY faster than the 6700m series, or, again if this info holds true, the 7600m series. So in essence the new Envy 17 will have a similar CPU and slower GPU than the previous model.
That's just my read of the current information though, -
Kind of a bummer that they're not offering a Blue Ray player in the new 15. I was almost considering getting one 15 and one 17 instead of a pair of 17's, so that one would be slightly more portable than the other. Also liked that the 15 has an 8-cell battery where the 17 only has a 6-cell. I guess that means that the new 17 3D has just as bad, or possibly worse, battery life than the previous model
That's OK, these will run plugged in most of the time, and on-battery use will likely never be more than an hour-long video presentation.
As soon as the boss man gets here with the company credit card this afternoon, we'll have a matching pair of fully loaded Envy 17 3D laptops ordered and on the way, and with that 33% coupon code, I'm able to bump up the CPU to the next higher one (2.4GHz i7-2760QM) and maybe get dual 500GB disk drives instead of a single 750GB, and still stay well under budget and get the purchase expensed on the books for this year's taxes.
Anybody know if the BIOS has an option to RAID-0 a pair of drives at the motherboard/hardware level? Or do I have to use the software RAID built into Windows? -
would the 17 3D screen use more power (eat more battery life) than the normal 17 in? What is the difference between the normal and the 3D screen outside of faster response time? How well does the 3D work?
Thanks for the answers -
I went through the steps to customize as well and saw no Blu Ray option which was disappointing for the 15" model. How will moving to the i7 from the base i5 affect battery life? Honestly I probably won't use it as a gaming device so it might not be worthwhile for me to go the quad core route. I really am interested in the blu ray option though. It would disappointing to have a 1080p screen but not have the ability to play blu rays.
-
Frankly,
Will this matter for non-gamers and non-CreativeSuite users? If it's not going to cause hiccups for mostly MS-based software used simultaneously with Dragon Naturally Speaking, I can't see a user like me needing much more. There are gaming laptops for that, but they're huge and heavy. -
I'll get the 17 3D with the coupon, but I really wanted the 15. -
Gamers and CreativeSuite users probably make up a big chunk of the premium notebook market, though.
NOW AVAILABLE - Updated ENVY 15, ENVY 17 / ENVY 17 3D
