These don't look to good. The Envy looks like a pavilion, and the new pavilion looks like a budget compaq.

I'm getting the feeling HP are push their models down the line this year, and trying to hold on to their pricing by using the branding name of the models.

 

hope its a dulled aluminum otherwise id hate touching it all the time, so cold and abrasive........

I was really hoping for something with dual SSDs, i7-3820QM and a GPU along the lines of Nvidia 650m, 660m or AMD 7770m, 7850m

 

i think that their new top line is Spectre, Envy is the new Pavilion

Yes, most likely they will be refreshed for the upcoming holiday season. I am guessing no real cosmetic changes only internal, upgraded Ivy Bridge processors, Graphics cards and SSD's possibly.

Is the Spectre line going to include a 17 inch? If so and if it's the new top line how are they going to separate it from the Envy and Pavilion's 17 inch? I would like to see it not include a DVD drive so it will be thinner and upgrade the display higher then 1080p, include Thunderbolt ports and USB 3.0 ports.

Although if they do that they will have a lot of notebook lines IMO, I mean the Spectre, Envy, Pavilion and the g-series budget notebooks.

 

There is no longer a standalone G-series lineup; the g4, g6, and g7 series are currently under Pavilion.

Makes sense, the Envy 15/17 and DV6/7 have the same target audience with both of them being multimedia laptops. So they're consolidating the two. Sad that they decided to remove the Envy instead of the DV.

In other news, Ford quit making all Lincoln luxury cars, but will be renaming everything from the Ford Focus to the Ford Escape to the Ford F-150 the "Lincoln Focus," "Lincoln Escape," and "Lincoln F-150." Because that's just as good as having a dedicated line of premium products, right?

Besides the Windows 8 OS and Intel Core i7-3630QM (3.4 GHz Turbo / 2.4 GHz) processor option, everything else about these notebooks are the same compared to their Windows 7-based Pavilion equivalents.

And do we know whether the screen on the Envy dv7 is the same high quality as the one in the Envy 17 3D?

I'm hoping so. I see that its Full HD but I know the 3D display supposedly has a better screen.

 

Let's hope they reworked the cooling system to be more like the Envy 17 3200 version with two fan systems instead of the existing one for the dv7 with just a single fan system.

Only thing that has changed is the name, slightly faster processor options and OS is now Windows 8, no option to "downgrade" to Win 7.

 

Not only that but also:

1. No option to configure an mSSD on the envy dv6 (not sure about the dv7, didn't try it)

2. No option for recovery discs (don't know if this is related to the OS, Windows 8).

3. Fewer hard drive options in the envy dv6, just 1TB 5400rpm drive and 750GB 7200rpm hybrid drive with HP Protectsmart.

Looking for a laptop with the Pavilion/Envy dv6's specs but with a touchscreen. Closest I've seen is the ASUS Zenbook U500vz but the price is kinda high and it loses some features.

#sigh Now I'm gonna wait and see what crops up but still got the Envy dv6 as 1st choice, the minute I see a good deal on it, I'll snap it up.

 

Any ideas on when we might see some decent coupons on these?

 

There was no way to add it to the dv7 either, though a 32GB or 64GB mSATA drive isn't a huge expense. Certainly would be cheaper than any HP pre-installed option.

 

Yeah, it will. If they only ever offer a maximum of 64GB mSSD, I'll replace it with a 128GB drive (256GB msata ssd's are a little too rich for my tastes at the moment). I believe installing the OS and other important programs here will offer greater benefits than the cache of Intel SRT. But my libraries will reside on the mechanical drive.

Of greater concern is if the framework for installing the mSSD exists in the 1st place. Would be a tragedy ordering one with the hopes of installing it yourself, only to discover that the msata slot isn't there or something similar.

 

I bought the dv4 5200, its at a 30 dollar discount and there is a 15 dollar coupon code floating around thats not hard to find. The dv4 has many customizable options at reasonable prices. 50 bucks to add a 32g ssd cache. The 3120M i3 is actually really fast and was another cheap upgrade for $20 (its an i3 but its closer to the high end i5 available just without turbo, which if you think about it is really a battery life tradeoff). A 630m nvidia graphics upgrade is $10! I bought this for my girlfriend but that GPU was a little treat for me. I declined a memory upgrade, I can upgrade to 8gb myself for $25 vs $100. And finally YES you can upgrade to a 7200rpm hd and guess what, it doesnt cost anything, just select it in the custom options. Why the hell all new laptops still have 5400 rpm hds is beyond me, the difference is huge and its not a big price difference. I couldnt find any reviews online about the fit and finish of this model, we went to bestbuy and found the m4 which looks like its the same case with a little nicer trim, and she liked it...and she liked that we could get a red one online so it was a winner. Has anyone gotten their hands on the dv4 5200 yet and can tell me what to expect as far as case quality and touchpad? Aluminum would be nice but I dont think this model got that like the m4 did.
