There’s a fairly new video driver available on the HP website for the NVIDIA 8400M GS. The version is 7.15.11.7432 A. It adds support for Vista SP1. Has anybody installed this driver on a dv6500t? Any problems? Did it improve your Windows Experience Index?

    Bah, who cares about WEI.

By looking at that driver version, it still seems to be a little old. The one currently used by many users/gamers is 174.74. Try laptopvideo2go.com/forum for more info. :)

In order of importance, I’m looking for the best combination of stability, power savings, and performance. Which source would be more likely to meet these requirements (HP or laptopvideo2go.com)?

I updated my driver, The Forceware is 174.32 which, surprised me cause HP is usually slow in updating video drivers.

Like ScifiMike12 said, go to LaptopVideo2go.com and do a little research. It's impossible to say without having the laptop in front of us to test it which would be best for you.

Best thing to do is to download both drivers and install/test them, and use Windows "Roll Back Driver" feature in Device Manager to roll back to the one that performs better for you.

What differences do you see after the update? The only enhancement listed on the HP website is that the new driver supports Vista SP1.

I updated to the new driver. So far, I don't see any changes or problems. Device manager shows 2/26/2008 date.

I just updated my driver. Works well so far. There are some slight differences in my WEI scores. Aero performance is down (from 3.4 to 3.2) and 3D gaming is up (from 4.4 to 4.5). The only thing the HP website says about this driver is that it provides support for Vista SP1. What does that mean in terms of functionality? The previous driver worked fine. So what’s the difference with regard to SP1?

Did you uninstall the old driver first? I didn't. I'm never quite sure if/when that needs to be done. I just assume the instructions would say so if it was required.

No, I never uninstall video drivers for fear that I will loose sight :D Windows would have to put a generic driver in and who knows.. Anyway no problems and its hard to say what improvements this may have brought. Maybe one would notice better compatibility in games etc.. Mainly I got the 8400m gs for the hdmi. My windows score has always been 3.2 for aero. Like yourself it picked up some points in other areas.

What is your default Gamma setting? Mine is 50%. You can find it in the NVIDIA Control Panel under Adjust Desktop Color Settings. 50% seems kind of high to me. I don’t recall what it was with the previous driver.

The description and name of this driver no longer lists the 8400M/8600M. It simply says NVIDIA GeForce Series. Any idea why it was made more generic?

because it is generic. all nvidia drivers are, its just the INF that seperates them
